Which of the Kiesel humbuckers for a HSS setup?

Postby spudmunkey » Fri Feb 19, 2016 4:53 pm

In an Aries, designed to be a modern take on a strat-style guitar (think Tesla Roadster vs a Lotas Élan. :)), what should I go with for the bridge humbucker pickup. Wanting the single coils to spank, sparkle and chime with a modern hi-if sound that the AP11 often has been attributed with...but looking for a bridge humbucker pickup that can bark and snarl and cut through high-gain (I typically play by myself, so I generally play with scooped tones, rather than more mid-heavy tones required to cut through mixes, etc.

Going with the Kiesel lithium single coil neck and middle pickups.

The way I understand it, there are 3 Kiesel humbuckers:
- Lithium
- Parallax (Greg Howe)
- Holdsworth

Thoughts?

I'm working with Mickey on a HSS Aries that I should finalize next week.
My choice for the bridge pickup is going to be the Parallax.

Awesome. Mine should be, too.

Why that pickup?

Are you going with the Kiesel single coils, or S60/AP11/TBH?

I don't know how it would blend in visually or sound wise but the M22SD is a pretty good all around hot bridge pup. I have one and it is hot, but not as hot the M22T I use to use. The M22T was just a bit too shrill for me at times.

I have the Parallax in my CT624 and love it. The sound I get when using a Marshall setting on my Kemper reminds me of late 70's/early 80's Priest. I wanted to get the Parallax in my AM6, but that model is only available with the Lithiums.

As for the single coils, I will be getting the TBH60s, but I'm adding a push/pull tone control to split the coils. The TBHs sound great split.

Hmm, can't do much for suggestions as there's hardly any info out on the new lithium singles. Funny how there's plenty out there for the new buckers...

Part of that is because of a few reasons, I think:

-the single coils were only launched with the Aries model, so fairly recent.
-they are only shown on the builder to be available on a tiny number of models that offer single coils.
-there are many models that can't get single coils at all...and that's not even including on builds with active electronics or piezo option.
-HH guitars seems to be vastly more popular, anyways.

I would go with the Parallax (it is just a better PU than the Lithium IMO - age group 40-60, and I am straight in the middle ).

It combines very well with the S60As in a DC135 of mine. And I do think it will match any single coil well, in addition to the twinblade.

Why not mix it up? Spud, you haven't gotten a new guitar in a while so I think you should go big and nab the Twinblade in the neck, Lithium single coil in the center, and Lithium Bridge humbucker. That sound would be explosive!
Rig goals:
1 A6C
2 AC375 (or AC475; 7-string preferred)
3 Carvin V3412
4 X64
5 Carvin BX1600
6 DC700C (27" scale)
7 Extended scale or Multiscale 6-string Bass
8 AM8/KVM8
9 K6CX/SCB6CX/DC6CX (26.5"/27" scale)
For fun:
10. CT73C
11. V59K/LB75

Pickup Post that may help you!

I loved the TBH in the neck position of my Bolt. So, I would also go with Lithium bridge, Lithium single in the middle, and TBH in the neck.

From what I have been hearing from Howe as of late, I don't think he is too much into the mid-scoop thing, so the Lithium might be suited better for the bridge pickup. From all of the descriptions I have read - everyone says it's a clear sounding pickup (the Lithium, I mean) so again, that might be suited better for mid-scooped chugga chug.

When I had the TBH in the neck position of my Bolt I was getting awesome some awesome Pulse era Gilmour-like tones....

I don't know about HSS but I just received a GH3 with HH Berylliums and they sound absolutely fantastic. Most of my playing is on the bridge bucker.

Yes, Berylliums are available as humbuckers and singles. They work together nicely in an HSS config.

So just to further elaborate, can the Beryllium singles do a decent strat tone, especially in the 2-4 positions (assuming splitting the humbucker)? And are the Beryllium singles quiet or noisy by themselves? The only reason I continue asking is that ordering an HSS Osiris does not allow the 10-day trial option.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone ever say their Carvin/kiesel single coils were any noisier than other single coils (my Lithiums are not particularly noisy), and the guitar cavities are generally shielded very well, but they are not made to be "noiseless", for what it's worth.

Fortunately, I realized that the new Delos guitars are similar to the Osiris to some degree, and there are YouTubes demonstrating them with Beryllium HSS configurations. So far, they sound pretty nice, I may risk pulling the trigger.
