Help me identify this Carvin Build ?

Postby again_i_rise » Fri Jun 24, 2016 2:31 pm

Serial dates it to 1991-1994 , it has two inputs (piezo?) one is super quiet.

Sounds like active pickups, but no battery box, i may have to look in the control panel.

My first guess was a dc200, but it does not look like the catalog one's of those years. Perhaps a custom. It has a Kahler locking bridge with roller saddles.

If anyone has thought to share on this guitar let me know. I just got it at a good price and think it's pretty cool.

What do you mean by this? All Carvin/Kiesels are custom ;) There's no production model DC200, the catalogs are just a few example builds. What part looks off to you?

That would have been considered a DC00 back then with the mother of pearl block inlays. That seems to be the DC200 Stereo model. And it would have active eletronics (pickups are passive). There should be passive volume control, active bass and treble, and a pan control for blending the bridge and neck pickup together. Later actives were master volume and tone with active treble and bass.

Also, that would be an '89 at the latest, as I think that headstock was no longer being used after that due to a cease and desist from Jackson/Charvel.

Either '88 or '89 DC200 with ST (rounded strat horns) body option.

The horns on the DC200, are more tapered and thin. This one has fatter stubbier horns that are beveled more like a strat.

Was that an option? To have the body to have a more rounded beveled contour. In any case it sounds great. I am assuming it is an Alder body. Though poplar and mahogany are possible.

It was a late eighties option for the DC200 Stereo. Just like Jason Becker's blue and purple models shown here in the Carvin video:

https://youtu.be/DzJ3y5n31as

That's how the ST300 got it's prefix. It's basically a mono dc200 with the ST body option, turned into a permanent model all its own now that the 200 (and sadly all stereo axes) is gone, and the 127 had generally taken it's place in the lineup.

The 4 screws on the bezels is a huge clue that this is a guitar from the eighties. The ST option shows that it's late from that decade. Right when neck through mayhem began :wall:
Carvin Weaponry:
1985 DC150K (koa) Stereo, M22N/M22SD w/black hardware.
1985 100 Watt X Amp 2 x 12 combo (XV212) upgraded w/ 2 Vintage 30's
...and other gear.

I had a 1988 DC125 with the ST option. The option first appeared in a magazine ad in the Spring of '88 (featuring Craig Chaquico's Blue DC125). The annual catalog had been out for a few months and the option wasn't in there. Mine also had an additional neck pickup (there was no DC127 model designation at the time). Standard body wood was Poplar.

Back in 1989, you could get a neck pickup installed to a DC125 as an option. The DC127 didn't become official until 1991

I have this exact guitar , only iefty and a lighter shade of blue , from the mid to late eighties . It is a DC200 stereo model . It is not active electronic , the 3 mini switches are coil split , coil split , and phase switch . The neck on mine a slim D shape , love that neck .
