Royal ebony

Postby peoplearestrange » Thu Dec 14, 2017 7:45 am

Does anyone know where Kiesel gets their royal ebony from?

Like what region and from what tree species? Purely curious..

I don't believe they've disclosed it.

The most popular and likely guess seems to be Katalox.

I don't know if it's been confirmed, but the most common rumor I see is Katalox. Not sure of the origin. If it is, it makes it not technically an ebony (likely a marketing term, much like how Chilean Sea Bass isn't really bass but sounds better than Patagonia toothfish)

Oh ok, yeah if it is katalox that would be cool, probably from Mexico and still hard as a rock. A lot of katalox i e seen doesn’t have as much figuring as the Kiesel fretboards seem to, but maybe they just got some really nice peices

Macassar royal ebony, I think. While I’m fine with katalox (by all accounts, it’s a really dense hard wood), I haven’t seen any that bears much resemblance to Kiesel’s fretboards in terms of colouring or figuring.

Hmm...they've also had Macassar abony, and they called it by that name, and it also looked different than their royal.

I think if you claim royal ebony and use katalox that would be fraud. I think you would be compelled to put Mexican in front. They have different scientific names and as far as google will tell me they are different woods all together. They are from different genus anyway.

I did not know about the sea bass thing. That is funny if true.

Katalox is also called "royal ebony"... not sure who coined it, but it's not something Jeff did. I just don't think that Kiesel's royal ebony boards look much like it: they're not as red and lack the bee's wing chatoyance. It just looks a lot more like Macassar royal ebony, which is more yellow-brown, and has figuring similar to pale moon.

I could be wrong though :D

No i definitely think you're on to something. Looking around it does seem that "marbled ebony", "black and white ebony", and "royal ebony", are all just names for highly figured variations of various ebony (Macassar, Gaboon, etc).
They all look the part:

I've watched a lot of Jeff. He and his father are not the type to buy an alternative wood and try to act like its the real thing. I've had criticisms about Kiesel, but legit wood is not one of them.

Another one for you: Orange Roughy isn't the fish's real name. It's a Slimehead.

Some estimates for total fakeness of fish served in restaurants are over 50%, aside from re-naming fish.

This was a huge issue in Toronto a few years ago. The health inspectors have really tightened up their checks though, and now the tilapia really is.

Also, both SLIMEHEAD and ORANGE ROUGHY would be good band names.
