Fatboy with 24.75 scale length?

Postby Rialas » Sun Dec 24, 2017 3:27 am

Did they make a fatboy in the shorter scale length.

Bought another Carvin, described as 24.75 scale length and mahogany fretboard.

I'm hoping it's a 25.5 with ebony.

Curious to see what's going to arrive, couldn't help myself wth this "impulse buy".

Ebony is standard, so safe to assume that it is.

Mahogany fretboard, they claimed? That's a new one on me. It's such a soft wood.

It's got to be ebony. And they stopped making Gibson scale necks a long time ago.

They got so many things wrong in their description. And it's not like what normally happens, where they copy the standard spec and miss upgrades. They list upgrades that it doesn't have, and even options and features not even available from Carvin at the time, much less in this model.

Body Wood: Mahogany body with Quilt Maple Top

Clearly a flamed maple top, and the body looks like the standard alder to me.

Neck wood: Mahogany Neck

Certainly looks like Maple to me.

Fingerboard: Rosewood fingerboard

That would be the darkest piece of Rosewood I have ever seen from Carvin. Definitely looks like ebony to me.

Scale length: 24 3/4"

If this were true, it would have to be some sort of early prototype. This model was never offered in it.

Nut width: 1 11/16"

Ok, so the got one right.

Bridge: Nashville tune-o-matic bridge / Stopbar Tailpiece

Nashville?

Hardware color: Nickel

Ok, this is the stupidest one. You can see that it's black in the photos.

Pickups and switching: 2 humbucker, 2 tone, 2 volume, 3- way switch

Is it? I think they need to learn to count.

Tuning gear: Grover locking tuners

You can clearly see they are Sperzel in the photos.

Even the description of the hardware is wrong.
But I've bought from them once before, and it was a great instrument.

Thanks Spudmonkey, I caught some of those discrepancies.

Can't wait to see what's going to turn up. :D

Mr. Holdsworth wanted his guitar to have a 25.5" scale. As far as I know, there has never been a Carvin Holdsworth made in 24.75".

Not sure, I'd have to check one of my old catalogs, but (I'm pretty sure) historically rosewood was standard on Carvins and an ebony fretboard was an upgrade. That one looks like rosewood to me.

On what Carvins? Once they started carving their own necks (as opposed to Hofner), ebony was used on most all, aside from maple on the occasional model.

The CM130-40, DC100-50-60, the DC200, the 125/35/45, and the move forward as they slid to 25" scale, all ebony with minor exceptions.

Maybe the pre 70's models...

I don't know where you're getting this info from Spud. I just did two completely random, cursory checks. First was a late 90s Bolt:

1998 bolt, ebony and maple board:
http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/images/98-bolt.html

Next I jumped to the year that happened to include the introduction of the c66. The Carvin museum reads:

"All new for 2003 was the Contour 66, one of the more revolutionary models to come from Carvin in many years. This 22-fret bolt neck guitar had an alder body with maple neck, and standard AAAA flamed maple top with matching headstock, ebony fingerboard, "

I jumped ahead to the last year of the catalog thinking something might have changed, and both the Bolt and the C66 are listed with ebony boards standard:

http://www.carvinmuseum.com/decade/imag ... ntour.html

Rosewood is an extremely rare item for Carvin Kiesel guitars, even now. You really have to go back into the seventies to find it being common.

Then something changed between that last year of catalogs at the museum and December of 2016, when they thought it was newsworthy enough to make a formal announcement: https://www.kieselguitars.com/blog/ebon ... ss-models/

They may be talking more about basses. The article itself says exactly what I said in my first post here:

"Kiesel Guitars/Carvin Guitars has famously used more expensive ebony as our standard fingerboard wood on most models since the 1970s,"

FAMOUSLY.

You can scroll through the entire museum since the Mark Kiesel "full luthiery" years kicked off in earnest with the set neck 150's, to find me a model with a rosewood board standard. Maybe some weird acoustic or something, but not likely.

Someone is tripping balls. And even if so, it's far from it being that standard board wood, Carvin being the house of through and set necks, for the most part.

Rosewood here and there maybe. But almost all maple and ebony.

EDIT: and anyhow a very silly thing to nit about. A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU SPUD AND EVERYONE HERE!!

I remember this as well. The Bolt, TBL both had rosewood as the standard up until the restrictions kicked in.
Maybe it wasn't always standard, but it certainly was for a time

It may end up being a bonus if it's rosewood with it becoming more difficult for manufacturers to use and export. I wanted ebony to match my H2, and HH2, but I certainly don't mind rosewood.
Merry Christmas all.

"The Kiesel Guitars USA Custom Shop is excited to announce that effective December 1st 2016, ebony fingerboards will be standard on all Custom Shop models, including replacement necks and guitar & bass kits. Kiesel Guitars/Carvin Guitars has famously used more expensive ebony as our standard fingerboard wood on most models since the 1970s, and we’re pleased to make this the standard wood on everything from this point forward."

I probably recalled reading/hearing the first sentence and missed reading the continuing information. My short term memory never has been very good... Oh well!

Merry Christmas! :)
