AE185 crackling output jack

Postby 2Plus2isChicken » Fri Sep 21, 2018 9:25 am

I have an AE185, a 2015 one with the old control layout, and it sounds fine other than the output jack crackles any time the end of the cable at the jack is bumped. What could it be? Maybe needs some Deoxit in the jack?

It's probably some dirt or rust on the contacts. Deoxit should work. The worst case is just a bad jack, which isn't too bad.

I assume I should spray a little Deoxit into the jack and work the cable in and out a few times, right?

Tentative yes?
I normally pull the jack and scrub it when I'm cleaning one out.

Deoxit fixed it. I sprayed just a bit into the jack, worked a cable in and out a few times and then tried playing and it sounds fine and there was no crackling. I haven't played this guitar much lately so dust could have accumulated in there over time.

Out of curiosity, is it an open jack, or the panel style jack that's used on the rounded-edge bodies?

It's the dual jack with the rectangular plate on the outside, if that's what you mean.

Ah, gotcha. That's a pair of open-style jacks, not the "deep panel" jack that the solid-bodies with rounded edges received (which eventually goes bad and needs to be replaced).

I do have a DC145 with one of those jacks. I hope if it ever goes bad there's no modding the guitar required to put a better one in.

Just buy a Switchcraft "deep panel" jack. It drops right in. Usually they come in stereo, so it can easily be set up for a double ground connection. I did this on my DC135 due to the jack getting loose and having static that wouldn't quit. It was about $10 for the jack, and it mounted perfect, no mods.

I'm probably mistaken about the DC145 because it's just a single output jack, not stereo like the AE185. It's a 2008 model and it has one of the circular-type jacks that isn't screwed in with a plate or anything. I'm thinking they don't use those any longer.
