Carvin DN612 KOA Doubleneck

Postby Wheels_detroit » Wed Jun 12, 2019 9:26 am

Here is a new Carvin for your viewing. My recently purchased Carvin DN612 Koa Doubleneck. This came up on Reverb and I purchased it immediately. This is my lifetime dream guitar. The place I purchased from dates it as 1983, but the serial number indicates 84-87. Hard to tell exactly which year. The six string side has the Kahler Pro Trem, which I have never personally seen on a Carvin Doubleneck.

This is from the Reverb Listing description: "A spectacular and Rare Carvin DN612 super sexy double neck in Rare Natural finish! This beauty, made by the masters at Carvin is a heavy duty jam machine! This dream machine has an unmistakable sound with everything a boundless player is looking for! This guitar has been treated right and kept safely in the case! This guitar was collector owned and it shows! No major dings or scratches to speak of! Just a few very minor fishish marks. Only played a handful of times. This Custom Is all original and unmodified. Includes original Hard case. These are getting almost impossible to find especially in this condition. Plays perfect and sounds really good!"

I think Doc Turn just dug himself a 6' hole in the ground, jumped in, and rolled over.

So a question for you all...One of the things I have been having trouble finding is the off-white plastic switch tips for the numerous small switches on this double neck. Any suggestions?

7 tiny mini-switches: These don't have plastic tips. They came standard as all metal from Carvin.

A question for whoever works at Kiesel that can answer this. Lets say I want a double neck guitar like this, because I do. It would have to be an Option 50 build, most likely paid for in full in advance. With a beautifully figured claro walnut top on a walnut body with five piece walnut maple walnut maple walnut laminated necks, ebony fretboards, and abalone block inlays, approximately how much money do you think this would cost me?

Back in the day, they had a sort of production set up for double neck guitars like that, like what they have currently for the double neck Osiris.

Anything beyond that Osiris would have to be a made-by-hand one-off, handmade by Jeff. If I remember right, a number that was thrown around as a starting point for this was $7500. Not including upgraded exotic woods, etc.

For reference, double neck osiris starts at around 1/3 of that.

Edit: to be clear, I dont work for kiesel, and it's just what I remember from Q&A videos, etc.

If you can even do a double, if you do it out of walnut, make sure you chamber the hell out of it or you won't be able to lift it. As I've posted elsewhere, my solid walnut TL60 is nearly 14 lbs. Great guitar, still love it, but can only play it standing for just a particular song maybe 2 now as my 60 year old back cannot tolerate it very long . . . Oh, I've got a couch position I can still use for playing it but like I need another reason to be on the couch? On my good days, 9 lbs or less I'm generally OK standing for a while . . .

Just curious . . . what does this KOA beauty weigh?

Don't you know I naturally sleep in an underground crypt? I don't have to dig a hole!

I had already saw this on another thread and commented on it. I still prefer my 150 since I have little call for a heavy DN in my playing, but in terms of collectability, that DN is way way up on the charts in terms of the golden years of the set neck, solid koa Carvin! Also a great studio player where you can sit around and play in shorter bursts.

It's been done for sure, but not anywhere as sweetly as on yours my friend. Here's a sweet white beauty w a Kahler on the straight six:

NOTE: I also just realized that the seller appears to be the exact same as yours for both the white painted maple DN and your clear koa!

Cool split for each pickup + phase for each neck, then I see two outputs, so... stereo out? I don't think it would have been piezo... so maybe a kill switch?

Crazy. Also, at the risk of sounding dumb, what does the phase switch do? Like what does it do to your sound/tone?

It puts single coil pickups out of phase with each other. It gives a very specific, thin sound to them. It's not that appealing of a tone, but it's just the right tone for some things. Bohemian Rhapsody and Sultans of Swing both use out-of-phase tones.

It can be hugely appealing in both bucker and single coil. Just listen to the most famous Les Paul in history, the Peter Green---> Gary Moore lester, owned by Kirk Hammet after paying seven figures for it... it was wired permanently out of phase, which really made that sound a "thing."

My koa 150 has the most beautiful out of phase humbucker sound I've still to this day ever heard.
