Colors on darker woods (mahogany, walnut, koa, limba)?

Postby spudmunkey » Sat Feb 12, 2011 9:23 pm

The new FG1 model differs in one way from the SH645 in that the back of the guitar is also stained like the front, just like it is on the Contour C66.

Sometimes it's hard to imagine what the colors would look like on mahogany.

It got me to thinkin' that we don't see a whole lot of color-stained mahogany 'round here. Most of the time, it's just because the back of the body has mahogany, and it is just colored as an afterthought. Perhaps people might be interested in a mahogany-topped AC375 or a colored mahogany Aries and would be inspired to stain it if they had some idea of what it might look like.

Anyone have any photos they'd like to share? I know there's a dragonburst AE185 out there, and rob_l had a satin teal DC with mahogany body wings...

Kevio: Do you happen to have the old version of this photo? You can see a little bit of the grain of the mahogany under where the "Best of NAMM" logo has been added.

edit: Found one I was thinkin' of:

And I found the page of rob's satin teal, but the photos aren't hosted anymore. :(

There's also a blue CT3 out there...

These pictures don't do the guitar justice. It is absolutely stunning, and it plays great too:

Colors on mahogany are a stretch for me, if they are not solid colors. Don't know why. I guess to me it's like walnut -- too much respect for the wood and if the grain is still visible I struggle. BTW I would never paint walnut. I really really like the black burst on that one up above -- the gloss finish and black burst really enrich the look as a whole. Maybe others tend to feel the same way in enough numbers, and that contributes to why we don't see a lot of them around. Just a guess.

Hey, KH, let's see the front of that beauty too.!

I'm really impressed w/ how well mahogany takes color; especially blue and what looks like sunsetburst. Anybody have a green 'hog axe?

And don't forget, that blackburst ST is not just clear-to-black on mahogany...there's black stain on it, too. I know around 2008 or so they were working on new black stains. That photo of a black on hog AE185 I posted above keeps dissappearing, but it was, if I remember right, an inside shot where the black stain looked much darker where KHs looks like its in sunlight. Could be the stain, could be the lighting, could be both.
