NBD LB70PF Claro BEM HAN...outdoor pics & sound clip

Postby gumbynotpokey » Sat Sep 15, 2012 6:38 pm

Camera is not cooperating. Real pictures, outdoors, will be shot tomorrow.

She arrived safely yesterday. I was in FL on business, but my family took her in and left her in the LR for me to open. Got home tonight and opened her up. The few usable pics don't do her justice. The top looks like one piece, but I don't think it is. I can't see a line for the bookmatch and I've tried HARD. The BEM board is so BEM it's nearly quilted. The epoxy Hard as Nails (HAN) coating on the board is like marble. Hard and smooth. The body, neck and basic look are amazing. Claro top and headstock meet my expectations (AMAZING looking). It has a flame in the figure.

She is a no-lines, no-dots fretless. Almost perfectly in tune on arrival. Some buzz on E string. I will let her settle in before tweaking the truss rod. Not too heavy. I feared a boat anchor on this walnut beauty. I could play this all night, no problem. 3 piece body has a maple laminate layer and it's perfect with the maple stripes and BEM board.

Kevio, spud, mariosangermano thanks for the input on this build. Keith, thanks for handling the order. For the bored or interested, here's the Waiting Room thread with all the details and story. http://www.carvinbbs.com/viewtopic.php?t=32739

Plugged in? Guess what, Carvinites? SHE SINGS! It's my first fretless. This instrument has a wonderful voice. It's amazing. Ok, the J99A's are full, present, punch, and have tons of top and bottom end. I get some growl from her! Piezos I love from my LB70P. The mid sweep is not on my 2004, so I'll grow into it.

OK, I'LL SHUT UP. On to a few pics. I am rushing these onto the Forum. More will come. Camera isn't liking me right now.

Ok, friends. What do you think?

PS: youngest who plays guitar and bass tried her after me. She sang for him too. He finger tapped it at one point. He goes, "Woah!" on the action and said, "I believe the word for that is CHERRY".

Wow! The only complaint I have is that there aren't enough pics, but I suppose that'll change soon enough. Major congrats, you'd have to be crazy not to enjoy a bass like that.

Also, more pics!

Beautiful bass GNP! I've always wondered, though... How does a fretless bass sound? It just seems like the notes won't be as 'crisp' or clearly defined...

Yeah, man, fretless has a totally different voice. Strap on headphones and get on youtube. Listen to "Every Time You Go Away" and also listen to Jaco Pastorius playing "Portrait of Tracy" then "(Used to Be a) Cha Cha". You'll get the idea.

I can't convey this in words, but I will try. The HAN board is as smooth as glass, and rock hard. The strings move across it with zero resistance. You can feel that it's not strings hitting wood. It's like marble. It's a great sensation when you slide, vibrato, etc. Really. It's amazing. Any non-bass playing guitar player would be fascinated by giving this bass a whirl for a few minutes. The HAN finish on the board is THAT cool.

Major congrats on that beauty! Can't wait to see some better pics.
Love the walnut back and neck, the BEM board, and the Maple layer in the body.

I also appreciate your description of the HAN coating.
It definately boosted it up the list of GAS I have bouncing around in my head.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy that sweet bass!

Well that was worth the wait. Great walnut and that board is crazy good. I know how you must be excited for the looks. It is great how Carvin can make Claro walnut look. I love looking at mine as much(ok, almost as much) as playing it. Fantastic :applause: :applause: :applause:

Outside pics. It's tough today...overcast, rainy off and on....

The truth is that the BEM board is entirely figured, but it's not like the entire board is coated in birdseye figure. It's like a very, very loose rolling marbling with BEM all over. The board literally shimmers like a quilt, and the shimmering and figure changes (light/dark, etc) with different light angles. I think the HAN epoxy might be helping to accentuate that. Naturally, this thing has to be seen to be appreciated for what it is.

Oh, man...dat is off da hook. That fingerboard is killah! Such beautiful 'amber waves of grain.' Hmmm...maybe I'll do something like it...only flamed...Oooooh.
