Vintage & Unusual Carvin-Kiesels?

Postby Doctor Turn » Thu Nov 17, 2016 5:02 pm

How about a thread for these? Just, when you see something you've never seen before, post a shot here.

This is an amazing looking specimen. Carvin SS76, a 1970's (this one here is '76) early true SuperStrat, maybe the earliest? I wouldn't count that Hag I'm buying because its scale length puts the 2 bucker build much closer to an SG than a strat. This all maple Carvin is 22 frets, 2 APH6 buckers (which must sound unbelievable on this build), a TOM bridge, Schaller tuners, all strung across the 25.5" strat scale. 2V/2T. Look at this thing:

Image

Just discovered this guitar.. with the way those buckers sound, strung over maple on the strat scale, this guitar must twang and scream. Holy schmackeroo! Carvin Museum page for it.
Image

Love to hear one. World's first SuperStrat? To top it all off they include a phase/polarity toggle to whack the buckers out of phase for the Strat Quack!

Thats pretty awesome. I've almost bought some of the older Carvin guitars a few times, I see alot of them pop up on ebay, like some double necks. I've grown accustomed to all the fancy options and woods offered now so I lean towards those most of them time now, but I appreciate the vintage stuff.

I actually saw this thing on ebay this week 1947-1949 Kiesel Lap Steel guitar for really cheap. I have no use for it but it would be a sweet item to have in a collection.

Yeah, I saw the SS76 out there. Interesting guitar. The flame on the neck is insane, not something I expected from that era. Looks like it would a be a fun guitar to wrestle.

Chris has one of those SS76s.
I've called perma-dibs on it in case he's ever in a bind, because I've got it's cousin the CM95.
It needs a friend.

- edit to show off that flat body-bolt neck beauty :) -

It's an interesting design on those APH6's, which also have the bezel-less, side-mount screws like the AP6's.

I'm curious how the bucker loaded CM95 (versus the AP6 version) differed from the AP6H-loaded, pre M22 version of the CM130, aside from the fact of the single master tone on the 130 versus the true lester setup of the 95.

Bolt neck vs set neck.
Also mine is an transitional version between the CM95 and the CM96.
They were experimenting with pickups and control layouts in late 1975 (when mine was made).
Mine has the headstock inlay and control layout from the 1975 page and pickups from the 1976 page.
(And tuning machines from a late 2000s acoustic :wall:)

Holy COOL.. So rare to see one of these with a genuine Bigsby-- not aftermarketed on but the real Mccoy from that era:

Image

It's actually a 160, just made out of plaine maple rather than the flame or koa typically seen with these "pulling out all the stops" version of the 150. Nonetheless, a a beautiful guitar and a rarity. Apparently made in 80, near the changeover from 1 universal tone to two tone knobs. Probably before they fattened the slab of the body, however. Still, I'd love to own this beast. It probably snarls like an animal with those vintage, original 22's. Mean-PAF land.

One thing Mark doesn't get enough credit for back during these early years of the classic era is how smooth and easy his neck heels were on set neck, LP style guitars like this.. look at this thing:

Image

Just a bit more neck heel back there than his modern day neck throughs.

WHOOPS/EDIT: it was aftermarketed. NYever-MIYNDE.

Those are pretty sweet!
Wish I had one myself.

But while we're on the topic of 150s/160s and rarities....

How about a quilt body?

Not rare enough?

How about a quilt neck?

lol I have both the SS76 and the CM130. I love both of them for different reasons.
My personal favorite oddity is this bad boy. Also from my personal collection.

Holy guacamole, all the postings here... I saw that DN yesterday on reverb and posted it on the thread devoted to the aqua doubleneck 7 that Jeff has out for the moment. The neck on that quilted 160 is nuts...

Hey Chris, did you grab this one recently?
Image

There was one on 'verb that I almost snatched. There's been an influx of nice stuff on Reverb actually, over the past week or so. You have that incredible M22'd white doubleneck from the Mark K classic era, you have this bad boy which, at any other time where I have two immediate Les Paul style models on deck to purchase, I would be buying right this minute, a true stereo 140 in REALLY good shape.
Image
New 150 hardtail from mid 80's went up w true TOM style and 4 knobs/thicker slab:

A V from the late 80's:
Image
This which is likely a 125 from 85, with an old Lawrence 500 (it probably howls like a banshee):

So many guitars, so little funds.... sigh...

Dang! My next Carvin/Kiesel will be a hollow bodied archtop. Hope it happens in my lifetime.

Look at what appeared on Reverb:

Image

Normally I'd be inclined to keep it a secret since it's such a rarity and I mght want it myself.. but no more detours with my money. Even a mint hardtail DC160 in solid super-figured maple or koa from 1984-6 couldn't deter me from the saving I've reinitiated for the CS6. . . well.. maybe that actually might be able to.

But for what you get, and the rarity, and the 999 opening price... I'd seriously consider this DN. The doubled up AP6 style buckers. Thing about this shape is this: sitting upright it kind of looks odd. But turn it on it's side and it looks pretty cool.
