Doctor Turn wrote:Dude! That's pretty crazy, to think you just landed that flamed 160 that's been drooled over throughout the eighties and beyond, and reprinted endlessly throughout the forums and the museum by guys who covet these specific guitars. I'd like to know who the great genius numbnuts was who junked the pickups completely on her.

A nice vintage set of ribbon free, individually taped bobbin M22's will set things right. If I could spare it I'd send you mine, but now that these are being pulled I especially need them. But mine are all black anyhow.

And they do have that something... Despite the similarity in scale, pickups, and building materials, they sound somewhat different from the old 200's (but very similar to the CM140's). These have more of that dense, thick yet piercing Les Paul Custom sound, with a correspondence between those maple Customs of the Seventies, with the maple 150/60's, and a traditional mahogany Custom and a koa 150/60. But with the switching of a Recording series, and the stereo output of those high end ES's.

Unique beasts, and I still think the shape is the most elegantly badass of the whole Golden Age. Especially the Eighties version after they thickened up the body slab to LP Special width (deceptive to the eye because of the chamfered edges on both sides of the slab shaving off a good bit of thickness at the right angle drop off on both sides of the slab. But when you look at the neck joint you see it's as thick as the mahogany on a Lester.

I keep forgetting to grab a new engraved truss rod for mine. I took the clips off from behind the neck because, even with the tremolo engaged, ever since solving the Kahler "issue" with a good reinforced string like elixir, it stays in tune very well. But I keep it locked to a hard tail most of the time anyhow. I just rarely use trems these days, or think in those terms when soloing. When I do use it it's more holding in my hand with light varying sustained pulls and pushes for that dreary vocal effect.

Guy I got it from was clueless about it and it was his only Carvin, he had it for 25 years and sells it for $700 on a local Phoenix web place like craigslist he at first did not want to ship it but I offered him $100 extra and he finally changed his mind, the whole time I couldn't eat drink or sleep normally - LOL, but remember there are a lot of websites, reviews and other demonic sources : ) that want to make you think that you need to pull all of the Carvin electronics out to make it sound like it should, half of the vintage guitars I have purchased have had this evil done unto them !!! ahhhh , yep it's scary stuff : )

That is absolutely it. If you look between the top and bottom volume knob, running above the tone knob and continuing under the mini switches there's an asymmetrical spider webby line of figure that scribbles out all the way to the edge of the guitar.

That, combined with all the other matches, pretty much clinches it in my mind. That little scribble of oddball figure is like DNA or a fingerprint. So unique it couldn't be replicated that perfectly from one guitar to another.

There's also another giveaway little scribble that starts between the first and second mini switch and waggles down towards the edge. Absolutely there on both.

You got that famous (to us fanatics at least) ad 160!
Carvin Weaponry:

Yep that's what I was thinking, the std grain is the "fingerprint" as the "flame or quilt" can change at the slightest angle - thanks again for your help and knowledge Doctor Turn, I took Monday off for a long weekend and this week has been something else... !!! "Let the Bidding Begin" LOL just kidding, I'm gonna enjoy this for a while and try to bring it back to that catalog look, we will be back as I just completed all of the major projects on my rehab home I will be able to be more "social" in the music scene first time in a long time...

It's mind-boggling that you now own the pinup guitar of my youth, you lucky stiff. Incredible. I'm glad this beauty found a good home.

Thanks for sharing the pictures and your story. Also, I love your Carvin lineup!

These guitars bring back some good memories. When I first started looking at the Carvin catalogs it was mid 70's. They used to put the gear outside and take pictures. All the drool worthy guitars had that awesome wood with that finish. I looks just like a catalog guitar. Great score.

Yep still pinching myself... thanks Greg : ) and to rub it in more it's prob the same one on the 1979 cover and def the same pic in the 1980 ad... I love my old vintage collection as well as my "newer" Carvins, I used to be Gibby all of the way (have a rare V, Expolorer Pro, Les P. studio, SG faded) but eventually Carvin had to take over, I can't believe how low $$ you can still get a vintage one for...

There is a STAGGERINGLY beautiful DC200K on ebay right now, with O.G. koa that I can honestly say is as bada$$ as on my 150k. Look at this momma:

It's painfully beautiful, but I just bought that superb Viking so I can't splurge on it, but it is a really amazing example, about the best that Mark made, of the DC200 as originally conceived, which is the best version IMHO... the sound of a Les Paul custom in a superstrat looking axe.. 24.75 scale, set neck, double Gibson style (improved PAF) humbuckers..

My god that koa gives me an ache in my guts. Koa can be as ordinary or even unresponsive sounding wood as any other. Naturally the older the better as it improves with age, and the older the wood (notwithstanding the improvement with age like spruce) more likely the better the quality, as some of the younger lighter stuff with limited chatoyance can be painfully ordinary looking and sounding, looking more like mahog or maple than koa .. but these heavily vertically striped slabs of the old stuff seems to have the highest odds of being that mind bendingly magical stuff. These stripes of figure seem to create channels of transmission or something. I've heard others say the same thing.

The days of getting koa that does what that 200K does, and this (WARNING--gratuitous koapics for koaboy):

are long gone, where it looks like beaten gold under a transparent copper or red amber veneer, or that fires are burning under a piece of mahogany. Amazing wood.
