My New Lava HF2 Fatboy

Postby Omsong » Fri Nov 10, 2017 6:13 pm

I'm celebrating; my new Deep Lava Fatboy arrived the other day! Kiesel continues to blow me away with the quality of their instruments. My previous Carvins were definitely great guitars but this one is even superior to those. I want to extend my gratitude to the entire Kiesel team for delivering an instrument that greatly exceeds my expectations.

SPECS:
HF2 - Fatboy
Gloss Deep Lava Flame Maple top and matching headstock
5 piece maple & walnut neck, Thinner neck option, 10 gauge strings
12" fretboard radius, EVO Frets, Birdseye Maple Fretboard, Offside Black Dots
22 Pole standard cream Holdsworth Pickups, push pull Split switch
Gold Hardware & gold Logo, Strap Locks

REVIEW
Construction is flawless, fret ends are very smooth, with very low action - nothing more needs to be said about perfection! And the Top is, well, amazing! It's the craziest "flame" I have ever seen - more like tight quilt. With it's billowing grain pattern and deep orange stain, it reminds me of a late evening Arizona desert sunset I saw the other evening. I get seriously lost in revere just looking at it, so gorgeous. It's the best top by far that I've ever had on a Carvin/Kiesel guitar. Add to its stunning flame top is a birch back with the craziest silk and wavy grain. It would make a terrific top in its own right.

Although I've been playing for more than 50 years, there are kids playing less than 3 years that can run rings around me. That being said, I do think I know good tone when I hear it. The tones of this Fatboy are clear and bell like, with an open airiness and clarity characteristic of and unique to the chambered Fatboy. It is quite balanced from lowest note to the highest with rich warm lows, full mids and ringing highs. It has none of the treble brittleness that I heard in the new HH2 KH12 pickups, which, frankly were also lacking in the level of bass and mid range volume that I prefer. Although I have the splitter switch, there is very little (and I mean little) tonal difference between humbucker and split tones - only a bit less volume on the single coils. Both mode are clear and articulate, with none of the muddyness that some Hummers can sink into.

I am totally sold on the EVO frets. I like the stainless steel for their longevity, but find they can have a bit of a "ping" when fretting notes. The EVOs are more like nickle in their "warmth", but I expect them to outlast nickle frets by a mile. Plus they have more of the smoothness of stainless steel (less resistance to string bending than nickle).

It's going to take quite a lot of practicing until I'm up to the quality of this Fatboy, but it sure will inspire me to play more and enjoy the experience along the way!

What a sweet guitar! 8) 8) The flame IS kinda like a tight quilt. And that back is outstanding.

It's really great to hear your enthusiasm about this beautiful guitar. It sounds like holding out for the instrument you really wanted has paid off in spades! The appointments you've chosen work so well together ... it's a breathtaking guitar. Plus, it's a Holdsworth Fatboy, one of the most unique-looking and sounding guitars ever produced. May it bring you much joy.

Thanks for the write-up and pictures. Both are incredible!

EDIT: Did you request a figured back? It's as striking as the flame!

Wow, stunning!
Even before I clicked on this thread, just reading “Lava” in the title I knew there would be eye candy. Definitely was not disappointed!

Such a beauty, you’re right to love it so much. Congrats and enjoy

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. Yes, second time around is/was a charm. :D And, no, I didn't request anything special with either the top (just routine flame) or back. it just shows how much Kiesel is determined to satisfy their customers.

When your wife asks: "Pretty, how much did it cost? Bet it was more than $3000..." And you can smile and answer: "Not even close to that much, hon!" You know it's a happy day! :D

Absolutely amazing build. I'm totally positive it sounds more airy and lush than your previous direct pickup-mounted HH2.
Any chance for tone samples / original music?

Sorry, right now I don't have any way to recording it. I am thinking of getting a Focusrite Scarlet setup for Christmas, so hopefully in the near future I'll be able to post something. :)

BTW, I've been really enjoying it's split pickup clean tones - they are very close to true single coils. Of course, it has it's own semi-hollow voice, nothing like a Tele or Strat.

It's like they purposely picked a top wood that would complement the "Lava" theme. Actually LOOKS like lava.

This one I Really like! Those EVO frets sound really interesting to me, I surely would give them a try on my next build if they come in jumbo size and it would absolutely be a Fatboy very similar to this build...

I think that the available EVO fret sizes are the same as Stainless Steel. I really think they are worth an extra $20 over SS, and much easier to level (than SS) if that should ever be necessary (but I doubt it). They are definitely warmer sounding than the SS while being harder than nickel. :)

When I ordered this Fatboy I asked myself what specs kept me from liking the previous ones I owned. It came down to the standard neck which was too fatiguing for my left hand. So I ordered the 12" fretboard radius and the thinner neck profile. These options were not available on the Carvin built Fatboys, and I wouldn't have gotten a new one if they were still not available. I figured I might as well also upgrade the nickel frets to make the neck a first class one.

It would have been really cool if Allen could have played it so that at least once in it's guitar life it could have lived up to it's potential!
