NBD: Spalted Maple and Walnut BK40

Postby jsiddall » Sat Apr 14, 2018 11:32 am

I finally finished my dream bass: a satin 4 string J-bass with an 11 mm thick black line spalted maple top, dyed birdseye maple fretboard, one piece walnut body, five layer maple walnut neck and black hardware. It turned out exactly how I wanted.

I placed the order with Kiesel on December 20th, 2017 so this has been a few months in the making. By some people's definition NBD actually happened February 22 when the parts were delivered but there was a long road ahead at that point. Here is some history for reference:

This is the spalted maple plank I found at a mill in Quebec that started the whole build. I had been looking for a blocky looking stark black line piece for a while so when this 1.25" thick piece came up I nabbed it:

Next I needed a nice neck and I knew wouldn't be able to build one I would be happy with anytime soon. I came across Kiesel and after looking into their stuff decided a BK40 would be the perfect starting point. Here is what I received:

Certainly nothing wrong with that bass right there but it just wasn't what I had in mind for the final product.

Along the way I documented my progress here if anyone is interested in a bunch more detail:

One of the very best kit builds I've ever seen!
Really fine vision and great work on that beauty.
Congrats and enjoy!

Thanks all!

One more thing: I spent some time today setting up the neck angle, relief, action, intonation and pickup height. I increased the neck angle a bit to get the action a little lower and the relief and pickup height are at Kiesel recommended values. Action is a bit lower except for the low E (now C) since that is so loose. I set it up in drop C and plugged it in for a bit of noodling. Here is an audio clip of the stock J99 single coils with both pups and tone wide open, direct to disk, no amp, no processing. Listening to this reminds me how hard it is to sound clean when you are the only thing in the mix! Anyway in spite of the playing I am happy with the tone. This FLAC clip should play in Firefox and Chrome, not sure about other browsers:

Stunning. You're right - It was nice right out of the box, but you took it to the next level.
