It's an active preamp... with a pot shaft sticking out of it. My guess is that it's meant to replace the tone knob but the control cavity isn't deep enough for that so it lays in there sideways.

You guys, I love the sound of this thing! I plugged it in and was hearing all this chime and clarity from the pickups... just not the way I remember the C22B and C22J sounding at all... more like really loud single coils but with more depth to them. So I started A - B testing it against some of the other guitars... first off against one with a C22B to see if I was just remembering it wrong. I wasn't. There was that familiar old midrangey humbucker thinckness that I thought I knew so well. And the C22J (in the CS6) was sounding a lot like a really loud AP11 at the neck. So I thought that maybe they had the pickups wired in parallel, rather than series.

Well, it was time to open the hood and find out. There was that preamp sitting there, with the pickups wired like I always wire them. What I'm hearing is the EQ setting of the pre-amp, and I just love it. This guitar has a completely different sound from anything else I own, thus justifying its existence. :)

Congratulations! Very cool guitar. I predict this one will get lot's of play time.
Great looking wood. I have an AC275 with the same wood combo and finish,,,,,, I was just admiring it last night. That combo seems popular with the Pro's. My 275 was built for a fairly well known Country music star. Hmmmmmmm
Enjoy the heck out of that one........I know you will. :D

 Maybe he was going for a sort of P90 vibe from the stock p/ups?

Just saw this on FB. It's awesome! :applause: Do the pickups work if the battery is removed?

Good question! I haven't tried it.
I'm guessing not, but I'll find out soon.

Last night was the first night I'd ever had someone come up to me after a show and say, "That guitar sounds amazing!" 8)

No, they don't. Everything goes silent if the battery is removed.

Interesting. So what exactly does the circuit do?

Well, first it makes things louder.

But more importantly it has a pot with a center detente... and to my ears turning that pot to left takes the pickups into dark humbucker territory, Turning it to the right makes them sound more and more like single coils the further you go, from P-90 to the realm of the Telecaster. Still loud and still noiseless. I currently got the guitar sounding a lot like it has a pair of really loud AP11s in it.
