While sneaking around the arena with my brother-in-law I ran into Janick Gers from Iron Maiden and got to shake his hand. Really cool guy!

Thirty years ago as a very young musician I was blessed enough to have met and spoken about music with Dizzy Gillespie, Linoel Hampton, Kenny Burrell and Ed Cherry.

Within the last couple of years I've attend workshops and met with Stanley Jordan, George Duke and Lee Ritenour. 8)

When I was 14, my family went to LA to visit my grandmother. As per the usual, dad dropped me at Hollywood music for a few hours. I was sitting on an amp in the showroom playing The Trees, and from the corner of my eye this dude grabs a bass and starts playing along. REALLY WELL! It was Geddy Lee y'all. No s**t! Rush was in town and I had tickets to the show for the next night (He said he was sorry didn't have any on him, and I said I was already going. And all was well in the constellation of Cygnus) And I told all my friends (none of whom believed me for a second) that I'd jammed with Geddy Lee. You CANNOT make this stuff up!

Another time, I was at GC and in walked Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler. I spoke with them for a few. Also very cool.

I went to The Whisky on a Monday night because GC hosted (with Gibson) an open jam. Met Zakk Wylde that time. No Rest for the Wicked had just came out and we were both like 22 years old. He was still trippin that he'd got the Ozzy gig, and told me about the "Zakk Attakk Rakk" they'd built for him. He was like "Everything they tell you about getting all the gear you could ever want is true!!"

I met The Dead, with Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring backstage in 2003. Of course Garcia would've qualified for "idol" status, but he was long gone.

Craig Chaquico, Warren DeMartini, Eddie Van Halen, Guns and Roses, Ronnie James Dio, Graham Bonnet...there are a lot of them. Living 30 minutes from Hollywood my whole life meant it was quite common. I ran lights at a place called Radio City in Anaheim when I was 14, so Motley Crue, Ratt, Great White (still called Dante Fox at the time,) WASP, Lita Ford, etc all played there. Tommy Lee sneaked me beers to keep the spotlight on his drums, and off Mick, lol!

I missed Jimmy Page by about 5 minutes when he came to the Whisky to check out my friends in Led Zepagain (I was actually in the upstairs Green Room, so I would've been present.) That was a HUGE almost that would've crowned my list.

Hands down coolest celebrity meet: Fred Astair. He was like 80 then, and all I can say is that Gene Kelly must be really short, cause Astair was maybe 5'6 in loafers, lol!

In some ways, the now-ubiquitous mobile phone has taken some of the wonder from our lives. You KNOW there would have been selfies if this happened today.

Hell yeah!

Oh, and I also worked for Doc McGhee's real estate agent, so backstage passes to KISS were so easy I could go to the door at any show, ask for Doc, be escorted to the backstage area, and walk away with a fistful of lanyards for all of my friends. It was so common that it didn't even occur to me to include them in my other post. But yeah, Peter Criss and Paul Stanley are both very friendly and happy to spend time with fans. Gene speaks to no one without breasts. Ever. His whole "You the fans make us. You're the bosses of us." rap is total crap (unless there's a press camera on him.)

Have you ever walked around outside the Rainbow Ev? Lemmy is like always there. I met him before for a couple minutes, really nice guy. Didn't talk to him much (I was still in awe that he was there in the flesh) but he said hello and shook my hand :)

I've met all the guys from Queensryche except Scott and Chris (Chris was already LONG gone from the band). Have talked to Michael Wilton a bajillion times, same with Eddie. Met Geoff but he was already starting to become an A-hole.

Not really a hero to me, but a metal brother and that's the singer from the Japanese Folk Metal band Bellfast. Really nice guy.

Also met Kelly Simonz (my favorite Japanese guitarist of all time) a couple times and talk to him on FB from time to time. AMAZING guy and SOOOOOOO friendly. Last time I met him, before his signature pedal demo seminar he came up and shook my hand and said hello and let's talk later. Can't say enough good things about him :)

I've been SO lucky to not only meet, but hang-out & talk to almost ALL of my favorite guitar players. I've never met EVH & would love that to happen some day, but I'm very fortunate so far. Sammy Hagar is way up on my list to, just probably not with Eddie at the same time. I'd also like to meet Nuno too.

Here's my list of great guys that I had the chance to meet & I've got pictures (& stories) with each of them too.

Neil Zaza (2x) & got to spend lots of time talking too.
Brad Gillis (2x)
Steve Stevens (2x) Saw him play a very special Friedman amps NAMM show at the White House in Annihiem too.
Paul Gilbert
George Lynch (He was very cool & friendly to me & that shocked me from what I had heard about him)
Greg Howe (2x) & got to spend lots of time talking & saw Maragold play live too.
Guthrie Govan
Blues Saraceno (2x) - Lots of talking time & a mini Demo
Michael Anthony
Billy Sheehan
Steve Lukather (3x) & one was at Guitar Center where he played right in front of me too.
John Petrucci
Frank Gamble
Greg Koch - mini Demo & full concert
Richie Kotzen
Orianthi - (she smells wondful & has the best accent EVER)
Shinedown
Tesla
Steve Morse
E-Rock
M.A.B.
Gary Hoey
Vernon Reid (Living Color)
Rob Balducci
Ronnie North
Allan Holdsworth
Andy James (2x) & a killer demo too! Oh & an Epic photo bomb of him & Greg Howe together.

& one of my all time favorites was meeting Mark Tremonti (2x) & all the guys in his "Tremonti" band too. Meeting Wolfgang Van Halen & talking to him was something much cooler than I expected too. Mark is a very cool/down to Earth guy too!

I know there's a bunch that I'm forgetting, but you get the point. I really lucked out in a BIG way & I'm VERY greatful for all of this too!!!! I don't take this lightly at all & still can't believe this list after I typed it.

Peace! X-Mann

PS - Most of these pics are in my Carvin NAMM thread too. 8)

I met Billy with PSMS. Such a down to earth guy. My hometown is Pasadena, CA and we got talking about his days with Steve Vai and the David lee roth band and how he'd go over to DLR's house to record and stuff. Really cool stuff :)

I spoke to Carlos Santana on the phone once, about 1982. He was in town for a concert (I had 5th row seats) and stopped by the radio station for a preshow interview. During a song, I said, "What the heck" and called the station.

The DJ answered. I said I'd like to ask a question for him to pass on. He HANDED THE PHONE TO SANTANA.

So I stammered out, "What's your personal favorite of your recorded songs?"

"I love them all, but 'Incident at Neshabur' is very special to me. What's yours?"

"Has to be 'Europa.'"

"Great choice. Hope I see you at the show tonight."

At the concert, when "Europa" started, I jumped up on my seat and stuck my fist to my ear like a telephone. Santana saw me, pointed, smiled.

Memory of a lifetime.

The DJ in question was the iconic Redbeard, on Dallas's late, lamented KTXQ 102.1 FM ("Q102"). He still does stellar work online at http://www.inthestudio.net/.

Met Steve Howe at a Tower Records for a signing for the Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe cd. That's like...the only one. I don;t go ga-ga for "celebs".

Met a lot of rock stars when I did studio work. Slash joked I wasn't a real musician since I didn't smoke, drink, do drugs or have any tattoos.

Told him there was no room after all the talent. ;)

I met Yngwie Malmsteen in Toronto -- He's a super nice guy with a wicked sense of humour.

I've also met Dave Mustaine, although he's no longer a hero of mine. Growing up, his outspoken political views (woman president?), coverage of the Democratic Convention, and struggle against the PMRC were inspirational to me. In the last few years, he's devolved into a half-witted birther idiot, who I'm embarrassed to have ever looked up to.

When I was 18 or 19 years old had just got off work as a welder/fitter looking pretty dirty and sweaty. I stopped to get a 40 oz and in walks Joe Kocur one of the Bruise Brothers from the Red Wings. They had just got eliminated from the playoffs by Edmonton (1987), but brought some pride back to the team.
I walked right up to him and semi whispered "You guys played F..ing great" he responded in same: "Thank you very much". The funny part of this was the look on his face when I was approaching him, I think he thought I was gonna give him some business being about 7" taller and 100 lbs heavier. Total cool dude!
Sorry that's the most famous person I ever met.

Jon Donais of Shadows Fall/Anthrax has been one of my idols for the past decade. The second I heard The Art of Balance, I was hooked to his guitar playing.

I've met Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth and Bjorn & Jesper of In Flames after a show in Chicago for, like, 5 minutes. If only I can happen to run into Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, and Slash.
