Gentlemen, my refinish project is finally done, took me almost one month, with a very special gloss poly top and tru oil back. Personally I think it's not only looks better but also plays better than original. Enjoy it.

Beautiful!

It may have taken you a month, but that's fine. There is no shame in taking some extra time to get the job done right. The only shame is in rushing it and not having favorable results making you later want to do it all over again

Thanks. My original plan was to put a set of Duncan APH-1 on my C66 but then I found it has different wire color code with Carvin....I'm not good at electronics so it's safer to just solder them back to the original locations.

Stone Temple Pinot wrote:I think you have proof of the color wheel and color theory right there....
If you are mixing violet (mix of red and blue) with an orange-y color, you are mixing two secondary colors, and that's a recipe for an uglier color.
Mixing secondary (violet +orange) colors goes brown.

Since the tru oil is probably yellowish-orange that is probably why you are getting the grayish/black colors.
Mixing the three primary colors in theory goes black. So you have red, blue and a yellow color, thus the result.

So I think you're right....the tru oil is affecting it quite significantly.

I could be wrong, but that is my guess....

STP

You're not wrong. Because amber (yellow) is the complimentary of purple (directly across on the color wheel), it will neutralize the purple.

Purple is hard to mix for a number of reasons- one being that the red you're using is not true primary pigment.

If you want a nice bright vibrant purple, you need to use something like a carbazole dioxazine stain. One of the "tricks" for getting a nice, deep, vibrant color is to dye the wood slightly lighter than what you want, then mix a bit of the transparent dye in with the clear top coat. This won't work with tru oil. You'd have to spray with a lower sheen clear coat.
