First build BK40. Finish question...

Postby SEANZILLA » Sat May 21, 2016 3:31 am

Hey all,

I just got a BK40 kit and I'm getting some art done on it. I've never done this, so this may be an entirely stupid question.

It's a standard alder body and I'm having a woodburning artist burn New Hampshire's "Old man of the mountain" on it. I intend on finishing it with tung oil. Should I sand it down before the burn is done or after? I don't know if it makes a difference, but I'd rather ask before I hand this piece off.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm not completely sure, but I would think before. You wouldn't want to sand the art.

I would sand it beforehand, I'd also ask the guy doing the artwork. He'd know whether any sanding would take away some of the details in the wood burning he did and I'm sure he's tried sanding after doing the wood burning. So he'd probably know what it will look like. It will make the wood burning look thinner. At one place I worked at we had logos burned into a few things and after a few sanding and refinishing the logos just about disappeared.
