Father's Acoustic Bolt Day. Really!

Postby Coda » Sun Jun 18, 2017 3:58 pm

Happy Father's Day! I spent mine finishing up and noodling with a little project that I thought I'd share.

Image

This used to be my dad's 1964 Fender King. He passed away in April and left me a few guitars (and a banjo, lol) which I've been working on as time permits. There's a chance this wasn't out of the case since 2003 or so, and their house had some moisture issues - so unfortunately some of the instruments weren't in the best shape.

Image

Being Fender's first attempt at an acoustic, they went with the "screw" - not "glue" - method of joinery. So with screwdrivers in hand, I took apart just about everything that I could unscrew and gave it a good cleaning. On to the pics...

Note the metal "Tone Bar" that runs the entire length of the body.

The bridge saddles are individually adjustable - and are different diameters to match the radius of the fretboard, which is something like 7.5" - really round. I originally numbered them with sharpie to keep them in order, but realized that the numbers would come off when I soaked them. My micrometer made measuring them quick and easy for reassembly.

Cleaned, reassembled, strung, set up! The DeArmond pickup is after market, btw. Plays just like I remember it... This was the guitar I learned to play on when I was 11, and what I played until Dad got me my own electric when I was 15. Playing this really brings me back.

Very cool indeed! That bridge and tone bar are super interesting...
Never knew such an animal existed.
Hope you get many years of enjoyment and good memories of "Dad" from your fine refurb work.

Thanks guys! I've been playing this into a Marshall on the clean channel. It actually sounds pretty good - very good acoustic sound with a little grit when the pickup volume is up full. I haven't gone too loud but the feedback is also pretty easily controlled... there's just a point where it feeds back almost abruptly. Keep it below that point and you're good. Maybe it's the sound bar? (I've read that some people refer to it as the "tone suck" bar.)

I'd love to see others post their odd-ball instruments here as well!

That bridge is intriguing. I wish it had caught on more.
