Thank you "gnp" for the tone report! Very nicely put, sir!:applause:

I myself picked up a passive PB5 last year, and I wasn't sure how I'd like playing a passive single pickup bass since I have gotten used to playing my Carvin dual pickup basses w/ 18v preamps. I really like mine and I have experienced many of the same things you have with yours like not missing a second pickup, and getting a variety of tones depending on where you pluck (without sacrificing volume I might add).

BINGO on variety, BINGO on locations, and BINGO on not sacrificing volume.

I have an X54 arriving within the next few weeks, and it's got the P in the neck...hope it kills with the RADH!
I play the 5-string bass. Why? More bass.

6'ers are cool, too. ;)

Ok, I did another stretch of a couple of months of playing this puppy quite a bit and then settled it into the rotation. Just a quick note (good pun, eh?) on the tone. Ok, here's an update on the tone report:

 + :D

If that wasn't especially helpful, I'll say this....The Carvin split played passive is incredibly tasty and brings a TON of tone color variety. It is exceptionally good in bringing bark in a wonderfully tight and full humbucker way, and rounds out and warms up nicely when you let off your attack. The Carvin split on a fretless is wonderful. I can get any amount of clarity or warmth I want, and to my ears the complexity of this pickup's timbre pitted against the available warmth and/or mwah of a bare-board fretless is simply wonderful.

Ok, sorry for the nearly-empty/nearly-devoid of helpfulness update.

Anyone considering a Carvin bass who wants a bucker should strongly consider their split.

Our team made the total switch from floor wedges to in-ear monitors. This pickup on this bass with in-ears?

AMAZING.

Bump. A new generation deserves a peek at this product of pure excellence. It's like all of the types of wood got fused into a work of art. From your tone description, the same thing happened with all of the pickups. Doing the Mona Lisa of inlays would not improve that bare neck. Playable, collectable, admirable and just -able.
Be the bass

Yes, it's always worthy of a bump so the new folks can enjoy this crazy good build as well.

One of the best to ever show up here IMHO.

gumbynotpokey wrote:Well, as the regulars will know, I've wanted a Carvin split pu on a bolt neck without a pickguard for a while. Thanks to Mike Jones for trying. Even longer-term regulars might recall a group of us babysitting the product suggestion thread for them to come out with a split pu for about 2 years. They delivered with a tonal beast of a split. If you haven't heard the review demos from the bass mag literature, you should take a listen. For real. The Carvin split is amazing. EVEN GUITARISTS should listen. Why? Your bands deserve killer bass tone. (Ok, I'll say no more about that).

Some on the dreaded interwebs (TB) might ridicule me for sticking with the Carvin split on a custom bass that Carvin didn't build. But who cares about that sort of thinking?

I've been listening to instrumental jazz almost exclusively for the last year and half. Miles, Coltrane, Evans, Cannonball, Jim Hall, Wes, etc. Short of an upright, here is my next....

I wanted low-fi. Pure passive, single tone and volume control. Bolt hard maple neck. Figured myrtle top. Single piece swamp body. Black hardware. String through. Black veneer layer. The fingerboard is Ipe and it is bare wood. I chose Ipe due to its extreme hardness so I can fearlessly play rounds on this for a lifetime.

Pickup? Carvin SPLIT PICKUP! (Can't wait to hear this!)
Strings? Carvin NICKLE ROUNDWOUNDS! (I LOVE these strings and have played nothing else with the exception of Carvin flats since 2004!)

She ships Monday this coming week. I leave on a trip Monday with no net access until probably Wed or Th. Pardon me please while I seemingly abandon this thread.

MODS: Feel free to delete this thread if it's not in keeping with the intended use of this part of the Forum.

I will give a full tone report on this hybrid down the road. I AM SO looking forward to hearing the Carvin Split on a bare wood passive fretless!
