Heh... responses will vary according to their knowledge of this beautiful old vintage thang. I'll post pictures once I've paid for it and on the way. It just set my Carvin CS purchase timing back about a month. $800 already saved, but I cannot pass on this because the price is so good and I may not see this variant again (esp at this price) in my lifetime.

I'm almost there... transaction almost complete. Once it's being shipped I'll know it's mine.

Who knows, it may be a yawn to some. But it's an almost 50 year old guitar in amazing condition that was only made for a short time with some of the sweetest humbuckers on the planet.. and I have it on the table in its rarest and most sought after variant. At an amazing price. Fingers CROSSED.

I am excited for you.....whatever it is.
Just make sure you cover your @**, with the payment.
I hope they didn't request a pre-paid credit card, or MoneyPak.
Can't wait to see what it is!!!

My guess is '68 Les Paul with P90s.

Even a '68 with HBs would be close enough to the '57 Classics specs I love to be well worth it too.

Place your bets . . . place your bets . . .

No P90's. Happy w the Super Swede for now for that itch.

Humbuckers, humbuckers.. some of the most unusual sounding, almost sitar-ish humbuckers ever made this side of true vintage FilterTrons. It's not a Les Paul either. (This is getting built up out of proportion right now.. I just don't want to name it until it's def mine)

Yeah, being careful is part of the situation. Almost went around a major service but we're playing by the rules.

The wood it's made out of is part of what makes it so cool. An unsung tonewood of excellence.

LMAO!!!

PayPal is making me nuts. But I should complete the transaction within the next two hours and post pics once I know it's being shipped. I've never bought a guitar from a stranger on the other side of the country before, being in NYC there were so many shops there was never a need.

But this is a rare variant, and who knows if I'd find any even in a store. I think this is one of two on sale on the planet right now, and the only one in the USA.

Pics and ID tonight guys, promise. I shouldn't have posted so early, but I didn't think it would take this long.

So this is it: an immaculate 1972 Hagstrom HIIN OT hardtail variant which is next to impossible to find. Pat Smear from The Germs/Nirvana/Foo Fighters buys every one he finds because they're the most durable guitars he's played on the road. He created his own signature model with the new, reconstituted Hagstrom, based on this classic.

It's basically a closet queen with mint frets and rosewood board, everything is original and working but the kill switch on the top bout went and was replaced with a switch from a Jaguar. These hardtail versions almost never appear, the vast majority were made with a single point trem which don't stay in tune that great, and they change the sound a bit, so everyone hunts these very rare hardtails. Usually they appear in Sweden and they refuse to sell them out of the country (the last couple I saw were like that.. forget about original Super Swedes which are equally rare).

This is a guitar made of solid BIRCH. The cherry red ones are made out of slab mahog, but these burst and black ones were made of solid birch which is a stupendous tonewood and is the primary ingredient in the "Resonator" fretboards the reconstitued Hag uses today. H expander truss. Bolt on SG style guitar with the wildest sounding humbuckers you'll ever hear (same ones on the Swede, but not the Super Swede which were higher output).

This is it on Reverb, I saw it appear like two weeks ago and expected it to disappear immediately. Two weeks later I just couldn't stand it because I had the money. This was a one time opportunity and I pounced.

I know most of you guys don't know or care what this is, but this is a major lifetime victory for me... I've wanted one of these hardtail burst badasses in birch for-like-EVER, with everything original. I finally GOT ONE> Yee-haw!

Made in the Swedish land of milk and honey in 1972.

Congratulations!!! I always think it's a wonderful thing, when someone finally get's that long awaited dream item, whatever it may be.
I can't wait to hear a tone and feel report..
The shape is pretty aggressive, but dressed up with a pickgaurd, hardware, and paint job, that tricks the eye into seeing a more conservative guitar. Those Tricky Swedes.
I bet you can't wait to get your hands on it.

I almost forgot to ask.
Did you HAGgle with the seller on the price? Haha.

Yeah, I was surprised he accepted my first offer... If you google this model you'll see the guy I'm buying this off of has sold a few of these. He's actually a solid thrash signer in his own right, but he said this is the best example of an HiinOT that he's had. I got a great deal and must have caught him at a receptive moment. The pics of the guitar on the dinner table is the actual guitar in his place.

So it's an SG/LP scale axe, but it's a bolt on.. so with these incredibly wild humbuckers it has this super unusual sound to it that's all its own. And every time in my life that I've heard a hard tail, and especially the super rare burst/bitch hard tail, it almost sounds like a Les Paul and a Strat crossed wires.. Sort of is what it looks like, half Strat half SG. It's a very percussive, thick and rich sound that has this freaky metallic transparency and note separation. Listening to the mahogany/trem versions will sound slightly different, especially if the frets are worn way down. Here's a good example of the sound, guy can play only sightly, but it's the exact model down to the bridge, the wood, the burst, and the great condition. Very unique sound, brief but good introductory clip to this variant:

Birch burst with a trem.. so clear yet full and musical:

And I love those batwing (some say Open Book) head stocks.

I suspect half of the views on that video are from you day dreaming about how that first session strumming, picking, and going back and forth through the toggle switch will feel and sound. LOL.

Gary K should look into whether 'ol Floyd is paying any royalties to Hagstrom for the use of their string tree design. HaHa.

Congrats D'Turn! I love the hybrid not-quite-this, not-quite-that look of this guitar. It's very unique while at the same being familiar. Sooo, when does it arrive? Did you time it to get it on the weekend?
