I agree... Even the "Olive" colored one wouldn't be so bad if it just had white, cream, or maybe some sort of black multi-layered binding.

Totally. I actually think the finished are pretty cool. It's just that the overall look is a little much.

Probably my favorite color in this series... they have this "trans geode" series of colors which have a slight shift up towards the top:

Image

Which is pretty sharp and will probably age awesomely. This one is a bit much and reminds me of the PRS and Kiesels that have these trifades going up the body:

Image

The first one with the icy blue/silver going up into a hint of buff color blending in.. I think that's pretty sharp, and as the patina of the finish starts to yellow (like Pelham blue does), I think it will play against aging binding really well.

Not 7.5 grand worth, but nice nonetheless.

That's definitely a MISS. Gibson definitely can be Hit or Miss. Looks like he's happy with his HP replacement though. Definitely worth the extra $ for the HP. Just get rid of the excessive chrome. https://youtu.be/UPHPwZSUx74

Give me that red one on a V220 or X220, with that red binding. I'd literally make that my girlfriend in the most disgusting, vile way :stir:

I know it's hit or miss, but up at that price point to have that kind of grot go out the door and sold for almost three grand is insanity. And that's a replacement.

And totally agree on the excess chrome of those HP's, which also if I remember correct have the GForce tuning system? Plus a PCB instead of a wiring harness?

In my view, although there are a decent bit of very nice looking Les Pauls out there, for the price that the good ones are selling for (with the same if not higher likelihood of going through a litany of instruments as other manufacturers who have their units made offshore before finding "the one"... which is an awful commentary on the "made in USA" tout of PLEK Gibbies) I'd be hard pressed to not buy a used Custom or Standard.

I've come close several times to buying one of these 70's TSB Customs:
Image

They growl like an angry junkyard dog, regardless whether TTops or Shaws (slightly prefer the former), even though they weigh a ton.

Agreed. That should have never left the factory like that. :naughty:
Wildwood seems to be a good place to get a good one. Sweetwater at least takes them out of the box, and weighs and photographs them. Musiciansfriend, and probably GC, just send you the next box the guy in the warehouse grabs. They must get a lot of returns.
Definitely don't need the G-force or PCB. Not sure of any tone issues, but....no thanks.
I'm not too impressed with the current electronics from C/K either.

There's also titanium saddles, and a completely different (albeit much nicer) neck heel, and a completely different "Soloist" neck shape that all come on the HP. It's not just electronics and tuners. It's a whole totally-differently-feeling instrument.

Yeah they have the Axcess neck, plus other mods... neck joint similar to Mark's old set necks. A nice improvement, definitely on a LEs Paul style guit.

Let's take it up one more notch.. the Les Paul Supreme has been bested as the top of the Les Paul Custom line. Meet the

Les Paul "Ultima"

Image

Nine grand for a meh quilt top, lots of binding and inlay work. I actually think the abalone in the binding makes it look tacky, but I don't mind the inlay work. Some of that stuff can be beautiful. To be fair this one is no exception. I think I like this one better than the supreme (HATE the supreme), and think it could be pretty sweet without the gaudy drippy binding.

And the price tag is wackadoo. I'd take that nine grand, buy a 70's Custom,
Image

plus a mahogany late 70's/early 80's Super Swede
Image

And still have a couple grand to build a korina CS.

Interesting that the body spec is "lower" (just mahogany, use of control cavity covers and no "top" on the back,) compared to a Supreme.
