lithium single weak output

Postby Ron P » Sun Apr 08, 2018 1:07 pm

Hey guys. I'm hoping someone can give me some advice.
I just purchased and installed two Lithium singles for the middle and neck positions of my Bolt (HSS). As far as I can see, I wired everything correctly, however the output from the neck position (as well as position 4 on the switch) is quite weak and clean compared to all other positions while running through a mildly distorted amp. I followed the wiring scheme of the "Kit 50 w/ 5way pickup selector". Again, I can't see anything wrong with my wiring, but...I could be wrong. Could it be a faulty pickup?

Ron

Would you be able to post any photos of your wiring connections, solders, Etc?

When reading the pickups with an Ohm meter, do both pickups measure the same resistance?

When I measure the leads (while soldered in place), I get about 4.28k ohm for each of the singles. If I connect a cable to the guitar jack and measure the output at the other end of the cable I get 4.2 for the center pickup and 0.4 for the neck.
I am baffled. All I did was pull out the cheap singles that were in there previously and rewired the lithiums the same way.

I'm trying to attach a picture, but I guess I don't know what I'm doing.

Did you compare the wire colors? Kiesel (and Carvin, for decades) uses a different wire color scheme from some other pickup manufacturers.

Both pickups have red and black wires. The black and ground came twisted together from the factory. The middle pup does have a dot...and an "R".

I just disconnected the ground (and black) wires from the volume pot, left the hot wire connected to the switch and remeasured the leads of the neck pup and I'm getting 0.48. I'm guessing something is wrong with that pup.

I had a C22 once that just had a bad wire. It was doing something similar.
It sounded weak and dead. I found a sort of kinked spot in the wire, cut it shorter and re-soldered it and it was fine afterward.

So we can assume that the pickup itself is okay, but a connection (or a connection location) somewhere isn't. Or possibly the selector switch has gone faulty. To absolutely ensure that the pickup in question is okay I guess we'd need to unsolder it and measure it isolated from the rest of the circuitry.

All I can think of off the top of my head.

Thanks for all the input guys. It would seem the neck pickup is bad. After testing it with the multimeter several times wired and unwired from the pickguard as well as measuring other pickups, I was consistently measuring this pickup at 0.48 k Ohms - much lower than all the others. So I called and Kiesel will be sending me a replacement while I send this one back.

I have to say, I've never been one to reach for the multimeter before, but I guess I need to embrace it.

Thanks again!
