Bass Pickups Output Question

Postby Chula Vista » Sun Jan 14, 2018 12:44 pm

Just received a VB4 with a Split Coil pickup in the neck position and a Radium Radiused pickup in the bridge position.

I assume the blend pot is:

fully clockwise = just bridge pickup
fully CCW = just neck
middle detent = equal blend of both

The difference of output between fully CW and fully CCW is dramatic. CW is loud and punchy. CCW is anemic by comparison. I've tried adjusting the pickup heights to no avail.

Is this normal?????

Congratulations on the new bass. I'm sorry to read that it may not be what you expected.

I have the same PU configuration on a X44. Turning the blend knob towards the neck activates the SCP. Turning the blend knob towards the RADH activates the bridge pickup. Adjusting the blend knob to the center or detent default position selects both pickups. I find the SCP beefier and only slightly louder than the RADH. When you describe the sound of one pickup as anemic compared to the other, are are describing a marked thinness in the sound? A drop in volume? Both?

I'm not sure these remarks help. Bass Viking posted a great video demo of the neck pickup on his X44, though, and it might provide some index of what one of the pickups sounds like.

Good luck.

Anemic wasn't the best word. It's really just output volume. Thanks for the video!

You bet. Regardless, the dramatic drop in output you describe doesn't sound normal. Here's Bass Viking's thread on his X44. In it, he posts more videos showcasing both pickups and describes their sound:

I hope you can find a solution to this disappointing issue.

You aren't the first person I have seen complain about volume balance with the SCP.

It could be a wiring issue. But I'm gonna stretch and say it probably isn't.

The second and third gen radiused dual coils, are kind of a medium/lower output pickup. I have never Used the SCP, but I have always seen it described in such a way that It seems to be a high output pickup.

The radiused pickups sound good. But IMO, Kiesel needs to design one specifically to pair with the SCP, for relatively matched output.

Toptube is on it. His comments here reminded me of this thread from a few months back:

More great information here. The emerging evidence suggests I was off in earlier responses.

The problems with the early release of their split and its volume issues with an accompanying bridge PU were super-significant and detailed on this BBS on a number of threads. Returns and changes improved that early problem. Call his guys.

That pickup picture solved the puzzle. I just assumed that fully clockwise on the blend was the bridge pup and fully CCW was the SCP. With my SCP set as low as possible and the bridge pup as high as possible the output is much more balanced.

THANKS ALL!!! :applause: :applause: :applause:
