Fret ends on maple boards during cold months

Postby Treadplatedual » Tue May 22, 2018 9:05 am

On both of my maple fretboard kiesels, I've noticed a huge swing in fret ends popping out over the winter. Is this just something where I'll need to file them down once it gets cold again, or is there a better solution?

I have two Kiesels that it happened on.

Fortunately one of them had a tung oil neck and I had a local luthier take care of it. I don't notice a difference now after having it done. No ill effects.

The other one though had a cleared neck. The frets poked through the finish and left holes/cracks. I called Kiesel and they offered to fix it.

It's en-route back to me with the repair and we'll see what it looks like!

The problem actually is moisture. Or lack there of. If I get some poke, I will put a generous amount of oil on the board. In a few days it is gone for the most part.

Nothing wrong with filing them down on tung necks while the are at the full poke point. Just do not over do it or else they may come up short when things return to normal.

I have had people argue that this does not work. They give all the scientific reasons. The results speak for themselves for me.

I plug this stuff because I find it to works better than stuff made for furniture. And I use it in my very expensive wood wind instruments. And I am pretty picky about them. Nothing in it for me.

I just noticed this was an old thread that no one answered. Oh well. Guys probably got this fixed by now. Well tread , is it fixed?

Thanks for the replies... Turns out cold Midwest winters dry out the boards bad. My bamboo floors shrink too. I'll hit it with some oil and file down the edges if it's too bad this year.

Thanks toast! And lat!

Ihad the problem. Bought the special fret end file from StewMac. Its just for this issue . Takes care of the problem safely. No problem now, when the season changes.
