The Clock Starts Ticking (Again!)

Postby Omsong » Sat Sep 02, 2017 8:15 am

Some may remember my posting here a couple of months ago as I had ordered an HH2 on Memorial Day. That guitar arrived about three weeks ago and it was gorgeous: played like butter and my options came together perfectly. Unfortunately, I just couldn't bond with it's tone. Since it had to go back to the factory to have some fret sprout touched up, I thought it over and decided to swap it for a Fatboy rebuild.

The smaller, chambered body paired with the new Kiesel Holdsworth pickups of the HH2 have less of an acoustic, and more of a solid body and brighter tone quality compared to the HF2, IMO. Many players might prefer HH2's high degree of articulate note attack for high speed shredding and sweeps. I felt, however, that it gave too much of a glassy, brittle edge to the trebles that was unpleasing. BUT, that's just me: lots of guys (including Allan apparently) feel that its a near perfect combination.

Anyway, I've had several Fatboys in the past, and loved their tones, but couldn't ultimately get past their beefy necks. So they were sold. Now that we can spec. out thinner necks and tighter fretboard radii on the Holdsworth's, the time is right to go back to the HF2. This guitar will give me the tone that I missed with the HH2. Wish me luck!

So here are the HF2 specs:

When Morgan Freeman speaks, I listen!. Some of his science and religion documentaries have been very thought provoking.

Went for the lava again huh? I almost bought your HH2 out of GIS but went with my own build instead. Good luck!

roswell1965, what finish did you order? My last two guitars preceding the HH2 were orange, my favorite color, but I decided the lava would be a little less intense, and was right. But it's difficult to choose as Kiesel has so many terrific choices. I also leaned towards Aqua burst and even like deep black stain quite a lot. Surf green is also really cool....

It's funny I spent nearly a year going back and forth between option 50's and making dozens of PS mockups only to go with a build so pedestrian I was able to put it through on the online builder.

You really can't go wrong with black - as the fashion experts say! I recall reading that Les Paul preferred black guitars because, he said, it make it easier for the audience to see his hands when he was playing! Interesting perspective. :)

Well, this is perplexing. My old Deep Lava HH2 has just shown back up in the Guitars-In-Stock list HERE. I guess that someone else did not find it to their liking. Wonder why?

Into week 10 of my Fatboy build - really getting anxious! :)
