Speaking of better pics, I grabbed the Nexus 6P which has if not the best, then certainly ONE of the best smartphone cameras out there. Here's 7 quick snaps with it which does a better job of catching the look of the koa. It was a lens built by Sony originally for a DSLR, and they stuck it in a smartphone. The level of detail and accuracy this thing picks up is astounding.. here's the ol girl:

The resolution is outstanding, and thus if you click on them to see them in their native size, and then zoom in, there's virtually no deterioration--amazing! No need to use a flash to pick up the 3D effect of the chatoyancy, catch the depth of the finish and the figuring. Like night and day. It's ALMOST as nice as the guitar looks in person  8)

Beautiful instrument, DT. I`ll have to jump in on this one when I get back in the country tomorrow :) (A safe bet that everyone in here shares the opinion that Koa is one of, if not THE most beautiful wood out there?)

Thanks Jef.

And you can believe beyond all question that I feel that way. The next most attractive wood (imho) can be heavily figured korina, which is a distant second in my book. Real deal high altitude old growth Koa has a magic about it... like fires are burning under mirrors on its surface. The fact that it's, sonically, likely the most well balanced wood is the bonus of bonuses.

Nice... that guitar fooled me. Looking at it from the back, I (not thinking about those older two piece necks) saw the join between the two different pieces of wood running down the center and thought (thinking they were the two body halves meeting)--"Wow, that's a genuine old-day's style set neck DC200!"

But I caught it instantly because of the complete lack of a neck heel, or any evidence of a set-in point. But for a second I thought "This guy has friends in high places--he got them to step back in time for him, build it the old fashioned way, YET put a Wilkie on there to boot!"

Yes, I can be a bubblehead sometimes.

Anyhow, beautiful 200.

I wasn't paying attention to Carvin around the time the 200 was formally discontinued. Was it one of those things where they just figured they would pare down the line and allow the 127 to stand in its place? The body had been modified anyhow at this point (I was never nutty about the older, original shape with the thin horns, and slightly odd butt.. since then I've grown more fond of the original design). I can see here it's taken on the more modern 127 shape.

This one is listed right now on fleabay.

Seller says it's a koa neck and body. This is clearly a case of "the customer isn't always right".

Why would anyone cover up a nice piece of koa?

Why would Carvin even agree to such a monstrosity? :naughty:

I have my doubts about that thing. Even mine, with the classic sunburst everyone seems to agree is a perfect match made it a no return/no exchange build because of the color on Koa. I`m sure someone loves that blue thing, but for me it`s uglier than homemade soap and I just can`t see someone paying an extra $500 for all Koa, then painting over it knowing the company building it thought it was a bad enough idea to tell you "hey buddy, you`re SOL if you don`t like it. We really don`t want to do it".

But then again, maybe that`s why it`s for sale...

Well.. put it this way: it probably SOUNDS nicer than any other seafoam-painted V220!

Nice dreamy photo Jef of what is likely a dreamy 7 string.

I don't know but I WANT it. I'd at least check under the pickups, or inside the control cavity, if it really was koa. If so I'd sand that baby up and oil it down.

Beautiful as always, and this just shows how koa can look so different from photo to photo. Some pics of your guitar show some of the most unusual figure with an endless rat-a-tat of these stubby sections of stunning flame packed in densely next to and on top of each other. Here it just looks like a beautifully ropey, vertically figured guitar. Same thing with mine, some shots you see tons of fine flame, some you see a bunch of big bird eyes, then in others you see nothing but the zebra wood type striping. Some you see that yellow ochre ooze streaking through and out on the edges, others it just looks red and brown. A glorious chameleon like wood..

The gold hardware really looks nice and helps the Floyd to pop. And the hog back/body wood is beautiful. It's so red and and rich, especially in these photos it matches the koa well. Bellisimo!!
