Carvin exotic wood club

Postby Appollyon » Sun Jun 01, 2014 2:52 pm

Boring Sunday afternoon, so I thought I'd start a new club mainly to see all the beautiful Carvins that have unique woods: necks, bodies, boards of a wood Carvin does not carry. I know I've posted these two to death, but hopefully you can bear with me one more time.

Both pieces of wood were acquired through Exotic Woods USA - not the easiest of transactions, but we got it done with nice quality wood.

Small, but I've seen some exotic necks and boards posted here. Flick's DC800 comes to mind.

Small but growing club if Carvin allows us to send them wood and we can source the woods. It is not easy getting most exotic woods in neck blank size let alone the tops.

Top wood - New Guniea Striped Ebony from Gilmer Wood Co. in Oregon USA.
Totally smooth transaction and shipped directly to Carvin salesperson Steve Schisler.
https://www.gilmerwood.com/items.php?CID=31

Neck Wood - Wenge from Exotic-Woods in Burlington, Canada.
Also a smooth transaction and shipped to Steve S. at Carvin.
http://www.exotic-woods.com/index.html

It has been mentioned and I now agree, I should have left the ebony off the back and let the full Wenge neck with Black Llimba strips show through. Plus I would have saved a lot of weight and cash ha. I will keep that in mind if Carvin ever builds a 27" scale pointy 7 string.

Redwood ring a bell lol

I believe gpbarnett has an exotic wood build somewhere in the waiting room stage, being built as we speak.

I would love to see the bottom strap button area, with all of those 11 pieces of wood coming together.

I bought some wood (striped ebony & ash) from Gilmer, but it probably won't become a Carvin - the plan is to build a neck through chambered body headless 32" scale 4 string bass. I was really hoping that Carvin would offer a 32" bass, but it looks like that isn't going to happen. It is possible that there will be enough striped ebony leftover for a fingerboard. If that happens, it might get used in a future Carvin build.

9?
There is not really much contrast going on there. All dark woods. Pretty much looks like Black Limba with a couple of darker Wenge blocks is all. No wow at that location ha. I do love the guitar though and it sounds absolutely fantastic. Had to go with a .68 on the low B because I tune down to G# on that string [C# standard if a 6 string]. Going to a .70 when I change the strings again as I have kind of a percussive right hand lol.

DC7X "Customer Provided Woods" dimensions.

[note: Most of the woods I buy slightly larger than needed. In some cases the wood brokers will not cut down certain pieces and you will HAVE TO buy a larger piece. I am NOT talking a rip off! I mean they need to sell the pieces how they need to sell them and all have been VERY reasonable on the prices. Work with them and they will work with you! Do NOT expect the wood brokers to cut the woods exactly to size. The wood brokers will get you as close as they can. Carvin will take it from there.]

ALWAYS verify with a Carvin representative before making any non stock wood purchase.

Moisture Content - 6% to 8%
Absolutely NO CRACKS

Top and Back - 1/2" X 7" X 21" [Carvin will "book match" this piece]
Neck Wood - 2 1/8"* X 4" X 48" [2" Thick MAY be acceptable, verify with your Carvin salesperson]
Neck Strips - 2 1/8" X 1/4" X 48" [same deal as the neck. 2" MAY be ok, check first!]
Fret Board - 5/16" X 2 3/4" X 26 3/4"
