I've been in a strange mood lately. Lots of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. A pop/punk "Supergroup" made up from members of NOFX, Lagwagon. They only do covers. "Mandy", "I believe i Can Fly" and "Rainbow Connection" are some of my favorites, but this is my #1 (biased, though, since I'm a big Simon & Garfunkle fan):

You guys ever play the game unpopular opinion? It's basically a bunch of hot takes where people talk about what they dislike regrading well liked things that are usually very popular. I'm going to start a new thread for that game and use Rush to kick it off, lol.

On this note, Depeche Mode's Violator was the start of the morning. So many great songs on it.

Little flashback to my youth. One of the best bands that never got The Break. (They actually signed with Capricorn, who promptly went bankrupt.) The guitar player, Rocky Athas, was a friend and contemporary of SRV - and later did a couple years as the touring player for John Mayall. Rocky was a groundbreaking rock player in the late 1970s - on a near-par technically with EVH - and his stylings and techniques can be heard influencing players like Ted Nugent ("I Want to Tell You") and Brian May (the solo in "It's Late").

Rocky remains the only player ever to get an endorsement deal with Gibson without being signed to a major label.

I don’t know how to embed a vid, but I’ve been listening to a lot of Jakub Żytecki lately. In addition to being just straight up beautiful music imo, I find that his approach to guitar helps me break out of the ruts I frequently find myself in.

Andy went to pieces?

Andy Timmons is one of my favorite players - not least because he's a naturalized Texan (lives in McKinney TX, just north of Dallas).

Yup, met him there at the Guitar Sanctuary years ago. Heard his whole Sgt Peppers instrumental concert there. You will NOT find a nicer dude! Probably talked to "no name me" for about 5 minutes. Just BS'ing. Signed a CD for my wife Terri who could not make the trip down.

EDIT: Also, the thing that I started imitating is the way he slides all over the fretboard in and out of notes and even chords. Previously, I would jump up or down a string, maybe hammer on into a bend, end a bend with a pull off etc which can sound cool enough but that sliding up and down the fretboard just has a "better" sound to my ear . . . which is my only "real" talent. The ONLY guitar player that actually made this OLD dog try new tricks . . .

A slightly slower vid maybe a bit more soulful [??] of Andy "sliding around" . . .

Man, oh man. This is 31 minutes of stupendous.

https://youtu.be/4innN_jqF38

If you dig improvisation, improvisational jazz, jam band explorations, and so forth...
If you know their classic songs and never heard their very best group improvisation
If you didn't know Jerry was a virtuoso on his first instrument (banjo) and exported that to a Strat
If you think you know how to play over changes on guitar, or on bass
If you think playing rhythm guitar is boring and didn't know Bob Weir studied how McCoy Tyner played piano under Coltrane

Then listen to this. Headphones.

Man, oh, man.

Just stumbled upon this guy by accident. The way each note/chord has its own real estate really appeals to me.

Rick Beato has all of the sudden turned me on to jazz, of which I was never much a fan in years past. I guess my ears are more mature nowadays - or maybe it's just the way he explains things.
