Got a build working, but I ordered another one anyway!!

Postby pbass6811 » Fri Mar 31, 2017 11:45 pm

Ok, so even though I'm waiting for an order, I went ahead and ordered another VB5! This one will be a bit more interesting than the first order. This one is gonna be...

VB5
-Fretless
-Alder body/Maple neck
-Flame Maple top
-Deep Black Cherry
-Black Gloss Back & Sides
-Black Ebony board
-Fret Lines(no dots)
-Hard As Nails coating
-Humbuckers
-Active/Passive electronics

So I went with Alder and the one piece neck because; A. I wanted to save a little bit of cash, and B. I'm one of those who thinks that pickups and preamps have a bit more to do with how an instrument sounds than the wood it's made of. I'm not saying it doesn't matter, I'm saying it doesn't matter to me, LOL! I like Ash because it looks cooler, and I think it's usually a bit lighter than Alder, but it costs more money. Any money I can save on this one I can put towards my next one...;-)

Not much point in a multi-piece neck when it's just gonna get painted over anyways.

I wanted the coating on the fingerboard because the best sounding fretless bass I've ever had or heard is the Pedulla Buzz basses. I've owned a couple of Pentabuzzes, and I always felt like the key ingredient to that amazing fretless sound was the coated board Pedulla uses. I don't want Bartolinis in my basses, so coating the board should get me what I want.

I may just spend most of this year waiting for new Kiesel basses and guitars...LOL! Oh yeah, this isn't an April Fool's joke...LOL!

I concur. I have two fretless basses with the HAN coating. Not only is it great to play on, but it's also very durable. IMHO, the HAN coating gives each note a more defined attack and accentuates the upper mids of your tone. This VB5 is going to be quite the "looker".

The multi-piece necks are much more for stability and clarity than looks, imo. If you're going to have one painted over, then just get the 5-piece maple. From a few feet away, you can't see the individual pieces, anyway.

I've never had good luck with single-piece necks...if not frequent truss adjustments and not staying in tune, there would be dead spots in the annoying "Fender" zone.
I play the 5-string bass. Why? More bass.

6'ers are cool, too. ;)
