New guy, AW5 on order

Postby Heavyduty » Sat Jun 03, 2017 10:51 am

Hi, all -

I've been a headless bass fan for years - I've owned a Steinberger USA XM2A, several Spirits and currently a pair of Synapse fivers (fretted and fretless.) I've wanted a full body headless five for years but could never justify the cost of a Steinberger or a Status. To complicate matters, I heavily prefer single humbucker basses.

Two weeks ago I found out about the AW5 model and then jumped in with both feet during the Memorial Day sale. A fellow TalkBass member posted pics of an in-stock VB5 that he picked up with similar cosmetics which pushed me over the edge - it looked great. If this works out (and I expect it will), I'm planning on coming back to the trough for a fretless AW5 - something pretty like a figured walnut top.

It's pretty basic:

AW5 - Kiesel Amos Williams Signature Vader Headless Electric Bass Right Handed
GM - Gunmetal Gray Metallic
CG - Clear Gloss Finish (Standard)
MA - Maple Neck/Alder Body (Standard)
FMF - Flamed Maple Fingerboard (Tung-Oiled)
IDIA - Diamond Inlays
IAB - Black Acrylic Inlay Material
STF - Stainless Med-Jumbo Frets .048" H .103" W
R14 - 14in Fretboard Radius (Standard)
BC - Black Hardware (Standard)
SL - Dunlop Straplocks
BLK - Black Pickups
DSLS - Drop Shadow Silver Logo
45 - Dunlop Super Bright Medium Gauge Roundwound Nickel Plated Strings
SC10B - Black Ultimate Soft Bass Case

So, just saying hello!

Was there one specific atribute of the AW5 that won you over, over the standard Vader bass?

Easy. Single MM type HB in the proper position. I'm not a fan of multiple pickup basses.

Gunmetal gray and a flamed maple fretboard w/ black markers and black hardware should look amazing!! Any day now, eh? Looking forward to seeing the pics and reading your thoughts on it.

You're either so amazed in how it came out that you haven't put it down since you've gotten it, or you were so disappointed that you sent it right back.

No, I was updating the Waiting Room thread and not this one. :D

I'm very impressed. There was a minor error in the build that I'm delighted about, I was sorry that I didn't order the back of neck body color option but that's how they built it - yay me!

Worksmanship is fantastic. I was a little worried about the first fret reach due to the smaller body, but it's working out fine - it's less of a reach than my old Steinberger XM2A. And it's a tonal monster! I took it to practice the other night, it sits perfectly in the mix and the band loves it.

Two bad phone pics:

That painted neck is the default for neck-through instruments unless you order something different (except on models where tung oil is standard, like the JB200C). :)

That's a good looking bass! :applause:

Hey, those phone pics are not bad at all. That bass is an interesting design, with that single pickup and all. Glad to hear it's a tone monster. Can you elaborate?

This is one of the coolest solid colors they offer and it looks great on this bass!!
The Flame board and black trim are brilliant touches as well.

Congrats and enjoy!!

I didn't order the back of neck body color option, but I've since been told in another thread that it's automatic. The website ordering didn't make that clear, it seemed to be an optional upgrade. I'm delighted!

A question to other active electronics Vader owners, please...

Last night at practice, I was finding the position of the passive tone pot affected the tone in active mode. I don’t notice that before, but I’m not sure if it’s new behavior or not.

Does your do the same?

Yes. Your passive tone control works in both active and passive modes. One of the reasons why I get the VC2 (2 volume control) option on all my basses is because of the ability to have some type of tone control in passive mode, the other reason I get that option is the flexibility it gives in blending two pickups.
