Well was playing my other basses earlier as well as a friends stingray 5 playing the same sequence, 1/4 notes on the A string, open E unmuted while using the B string is used as a thumb rest, as well as other noodling. I am almost 100% sure that this is actually a set up issue. I believe the open E is hitting the first fret causing this sound.
