Hard as Nails finish on an ebony fingerboard?

Postby cdg » Tue Nov 14, 2017 8:24 am

I'm a newbie to the forum and I'm considering ordering a fretless Vanquish bass to supplement the Brian Bromberg B24 I've had for many years. I'm just wondering if the "Hard as Nails" finish is really required on an ebony fingerboard AND what tonal effects the finish would have. I plan on using roundwound strings and I'm torn between wanting to protect the fingerboard from wear and possibly affecting the tone adversely. Any feedback is appreciated!

I’ve got a Vader 5 fretless with the HAN finish. I got the HAN finish because, up until I got this Vader, my favorite fretless was a Pedulla PentaBuzz and Pedulla uses a similar finish on their fretless basses.

Does an ebony board NEED the HAN finish? Absolutely not. Ebony is about as hard a Maple, so it doesn’t really need any help.

To my old, probably losing my hearing, ears, the coating that Kiesel and Pedulla use on their fretless basses adds a bit of sparkle to the “mwah”. I also feel like there’s a bit more sustain. I don’t think it detracts from the natural fretless Sound at all. In fact, my VB5F has a more “upright” sound than I ever got out of either of my PentaBuzzes. I like what it adds, aesthetically, as well. The only drawback is that it does show minor scratches(I use roundwounds), but those would be in the wood if it wasn’t coated.

I like the HAN finish. If I needed another fretless, I’d order it with the HAN.

Yep. It’s much more of a tone enhancer than a tone inhibitor. Looks really cool too. The only reason more people don’t get it is the price, but it’s an upgrade in every sense of the word.
Kiesel basses, lots of pedals, nothing wrong

Old timers on here know I have the HAN coating on my beloved claro fretless. What a beauty.

Required for ebony? No. Not by K/C and not for longevity of the board - even for rounds.

Tone? Bright, full, plenty of clarity across the entire tone register. Mwah for days and days.

I'd get it again in a heartbeat.

Thanks for all the comments folks. Sounds like HAN is a go. I've heard that it makes the bass non-returnable but I can't imagine returning one of these pieces of art unless it was simply damaged.

And let me add that the HAN is durable. My two fretless basses both have the HAN treatment and they’re about 7 yrs. old now, and apart from minor wear marks from the roundwounds I use the coating is still intact.
