How would you characterize the tonal difference if any? Are there any issues with sustaining the tone on the 30" Vader?

What are the overall dimensions of the short scale?

from the product page:
with 30" scale option, overall length is 35 1/8"

Shortscale generally have a darker tone, with notes generally being less defined, due to less vibrating length. But this is relative. Some shortscale can be pretty articulate compared to others. Some shortscales also have more of that banjo twang to the feel. Which can melt sustain. but has a tonal use in its own right.
