Okay to use Carvin tuners without the thumb lock?

Postby oreos » Tue Mar 21, 2017 8:52 am

i recently bought a 2015 Carvin that came with locking tuners and a hardtail. i dont feel like the locking mechanism is necessary in this context. is there any reason not to just remove the locks? they seem like relatively nice open backs without them, but i cant tell if the locks have any structural or functional purpose in addition to locking

:?: :?
Well, the posts usually only have enough space for 1 wrap or so. But why would you not lock the strings, regardless of bridge??

I imagine they'd rattle if you left them unlocked.

I'd use the locks.
You have them.
Super easy string change.
Minimal slipping.

What would be the benefit of not using them?
Current Carvins:
2010 Bolt (Candy Red Metallic)
2013 Bolt Plus (Koa)
2016 Black n Blue VSEVEN
2017 TT SCB6

Wish List
Some sort of multiscale 6 HSS with RAD ASH
JB Numbers Guitar (July sale has given me the itch!)

IMHO, they will not really work without the thumb screw tightened. They are not really designed to be used like standard tuners, which would have tapered posts and a much smaller hole for the string to go through.
Guitars: Bolt in Electric Blue, Cobalt 750T
Basses: B4A in classic sunburst , B5 in sunsetburst, XB75 in TPB, PB4 in Blue Burst, LB70F in Pearl blue

Yeah. The technique is to pull the strings tight, then turn the thumb screw.

Less turns equals less slip, tighter tuning. I've always loved the Sperzels.
