New pickup covers!

Postby spudmunkey » Fri Jan 12, 2018 11:10 am

If I heard right, 6 and 7-string. Brushed gold, black (which kinda matches the black headless bridges) and brushed chrome finishes. No polished finishes.

Available on all Kiesel style 12 and 14 pole humbuckers (not the 22/26 pole C, M, H, FG or D).

Yes the 7 string guitar models have had their routes enlarged to for the coveted pickups. This is kind of a bummer as I always liked the route 7-strings with the more open-coil-pickup-matching corner radius, unlike the 6-string models which are more squared-off.

To upgrade the pickups on a build to covered, $40 for chrome and black, and $60 for gold. Gold, silver and black pole pieces can be mixed or matched but the silver are standard no matter what pickup cover you select.

Direct mount or bezels.

These new covers are a different material and different thickness than the covers that were on the s22 pickups. Whereas those did have an effect on the tone of the pickups, these should have no to minimal impact (not only because of the cover material, but also because the pole pieces are exposed and closer to the strings. Expect a VERY SLIGHT output drop with the covers, per Jeff.

Lead time on replacement pickups as parts is about a month. Should be no delays in a new build.

Beryllium demo is coming, as well as single coil version at some point.

Meh.
We are entitled to our own, wrong, opinions.

Guitar theorem: G=X+1 where G= guitars one needs, and X = guitars one has.

Do or do not; there is no understand.

Did they give any description of their tone?

"More classic, more jazzy classic-rock. Lower output than the Lithiums."

Different wire, different magnets (not specified what), and he mentioned "a lot of the same parts that older vintage pickups used".

So many options and finishes I like, but not a single guitar in the lineup I'd get them on. Shame.

I kinda wish the gold came with gold screws as standard. I feel like gold with silver screws will look strange...but that could make things more confusing.

I am a man of my word almost 50% of the time. So i just almost bought a berr whatever it is. They are not quite ready to sell. So I gave them the card info and said send them when you can.

If I like them I will get a new guitar immediately. If not I will wait for the thor whatevers to come out.

The lithium pickup is an excellent pick up. It does many things well. It is just not crunchy enough for me. I know I will loose some good things in the trade off. I have tried two aftermarkets at great expense but still am looking for something else. I am crossing my fingers. My standard scale ct7 has pickups in it I thought I would never like. Dimarzio deactivator.

$40 clams for a cover appears a bit steep if I am buying them assembled in a pick up as well. Unless they are just really pretty.

I love s series pickup. I think I am the only one.

If I am the first out there to get them I will record a little a/b riff or sumptin. I am only getting the bridge right now.

2 covers. At least, that's my understanding. It's $40 to upgrade a new guitar build, which comes with two humbuckers...so technically $20 a pickup, in case that makes a difference.

My understanding is that the covers must be ordered with pickups or spec.ed out on a new build. I.e, not sold as stand alone covers.

I wonder if the Allparts pickup covers would fit these pickups in case someone wanted polished chrome or gold? If I remember right, they didn't fit the 22 pole pickups, which were a little wider... I might be remembering that wrong, though.

That's weird. Jeff in his vid spent tons of time explaining how they will fit existing pickups, including those on existing guitars built after a certain date that were without the covers.

I had to really think about his verbiage, but in the end, it seemed like he was saying that the covers are available on all of the pickups, and that the new covered pickups will drop in and fit any guitar...but that was it. I had to listen to it a couple times, but that's what I got from it.

While I think they look really good, $40 is pretty steep for chrome and $60 is nuts for gold. So now, if you want gold hardware, covers and polepieces you're up $140. To throw in gold frets for another $30 doesn't seem like a big deal at all anymore!

The soon-to-be-old S22s came at $10 per pickup, and there was no upcharge for gold beyond the hardware charge.

That was my interpretation, too, spudmunkey. Initially, I was thinking that I could buy a set of covers to put on my Fatboy, but Jeff kind of squashed that idea. I might consider dropping in a Beryllium neck pickup (once the verdict is in) but it would look unbalanced if I got a covered one and then decided to not replace the (uncovered) bridge. Hmmm...
