The AlTimATE HH2

Postby ChrisN » Mon Apr 02, 2018 12:25 pm

This is my No.2.
Searching for own electric-acoustic tones and merging features known from Al's and Tim's guitars... Meet the AlTimATE HH2 :D

Mahogany chambered body, spruce top, 5-piece all maple neck, ebony fretboard, vertically crowned SS jumbo frets grinded for 1mm E1 action @ 12th fret, tamarind knobs, KH12B pickup, neck pickup delete, hardtail Hipshot bridge.

10 weeks survival camp ahead of me. Wish me well

I am using the present tense to heal my fresh wating room wounds... Seriously though, cannot wait to share the pics as soon as she's here. Say, in 11 weeks? I bet your own HH2 will reach you sooner!

Our feelings are mutual, DWG. Thanks for joining me in the wait!

Dave, with all kinds of HH1X mods and alterations we have been thru, I am really curious about what wiring option would work best for the mahogany/spruce wood combo. I plan to explore the stock wiring with and without the treble bleed cap before I move any further. Will sure keep you posted. Thanks!

Whoohoo! As you already know, I have very similar goals for my next build... So I'm really curious about that Mahogany/Spruce combo. Sounds terrific! And I agree that it will most probably be a sonically different beast wrt your #1, possibly calling for a different wiring. Of course I have a few questions...

1) What type of strings do you plan to use on #2? Will you stick to 008s as on your #1 or will you try something different? I'm still struggling to get a good "semi-acoustic" sound with 008s, but it's a lot easier with 010s...

2) Which brings me to question n.2: I can't figure what the special fretwork you mentioned exactly is... Is it a progressive grinding of frets toward the body to get "pseudo-relief" out of a straight neck? Wouldn't that need to be optimized for a specific string gauge? And what are the advantages wrt "vanilla" (i.e. truss rod) relief adjustment?

3) After a year I still didn't figure how the internal chambering of my (neck PU-delete) HH is shaped. Do you think there is enough space on a chambered HH body for a soundhole/f-hole/soundport? I know this has little to do with your #2, but it might have a lot to do with MY #2 :D :D :D

I can't wait to hear some of that beautifully open harmony you conjure in your pieces coming out of that spruce top!

Good luck with the survival camp

PS - ...time to compose "waiting - part II?" :D

It may depend on whether I am able to swap the original headpiece for a Steinberger one. Double ball strings are a world of their own regarding their feel and tension.

MarkusB wrote:2) Which brings me to question n.2: I can't figure what the special fretwork you mentioned exactly is...

Honestly, I have never expected Kiesel to unveil a method to make it. Chris Hong (THX, Chris!) got an OK for what I wanted from the fret guy (THX, Michael!). My quote/order says "michael - fret crowning, fret crowning more vertical, action 1mm at 12th fret".

I believe the HH chamberning looks like this:

 The new tune written with my No.2 in mind is virtually finished. I would probably need to write at least one more to keep me sane.

I’m on week 14 of a pretty standard Vader build if that gives an idea oh how the shop is backed up. Hoping I get mine soon.

Congrats on the super cool order.

Congrats on the super cool order.

Being on a week 14 with a standard build nearly calls for granting knighthood! It took 13 weeks with my first build.
Looking forward to joining your NDG thread, soon.

13 weeks!?! I hope they crank my HH2 out quicker than that.

I had a Hamer Duotone that was spruce over chambered mahogany, sounded great.

No, we are not, DWG. But thanks for asking!
I was given 06/11 as the estimated completion date, so potentially she may emerge soon.
As the leap across the pond will take some additional precious time, I am still hoping she will reach me right on time for my trio's next live gig scheduled for o6/22.
I will sure keep you and the other guys posted!
Cheers,

Here's hoping! Sounds like a mighty fine instrument you've got on the way, I'd love to hear a tone report on the spruce!

I sure will post some tone samples and, possibly, wiring alterations for the hog/spruce combo.
Cheers Tread!
