Getting ready to order a second AW5 - need opinions

Postby marley's ghost » Thu Feb 07, 2019 3:56 pm

So my love for my AW5 is like no other. After about 20 or so gigs it feels and sounds like no other bass I've ever owned.

I want a second one now, and I'm trying to decide on a few things and could use some advice.

Flame vs Quilt
Clear vs Deep yellow
Std frets vs vintage gold vs burst
Ebony vs Birdseye fretboard.
Chambered?

thanks!

Here's my current beauty.

Hey, man. Thanks for posting a pic of one of the most beautiful Kiesel basses out there. I'm also nuts about my AW5 and spend a lot of time on the builder daydreaming about a second build. The question always driving the options I play with is: "What do I want a 2nd AW5 to look and sound like to complement and yet contrast from the one I have?" Since I consistently prefer some options over others (e.g., ebony boards, jumbo frets, MOP inlays), I focus on cosmetics and some structural features, things like a chambered body since my current AW5 is solid, a body wood different from the ash on the current bass. That sort of thing.

Based on pictures you've posted of this bass here and on other forums, and thinking about its look and construction in respect to the options you've listed, I personally lean towards a quilt top (since you have flame), a chambered body, and a deep clear gloss finish. On the other hand, a deep yellow flame top in satin would look mighty sweet with an ebony board (less color variation) and either NIN or the staggered dot inlays to contrast with the top edge inlays on your current bass.

Whatever you come up with will be very cool, no doubt. Are you thinking of additional options like sending alternate electronics?

Thanks for posting. It's always fun to talk options.

I want a clone sound and playability wise but a different look. So they each back up the other. Being a lefty, I'm scared of it getting stolen or damaged as I gig about 3 times a month.

Thanks for the advice.

AFAIK, the AW5 only has one stock pickup and electronics option.

Yeah. But I've read of a few AW5 players who swap the Kiesel MM pickup for a Bartolini, or replace the Kiesel preamp and/or tone stack with something from another manufacturer. You're right about the pickup and electronics option for this model, of course. I guess "different" is a more accurate term than alternate or alternative in this context.

Either way, I'm jazzed for you!

I think both of your color choices would look great with a blackburst. I think I'd go with quilt, for either.

There's also "chocolate" maple. Which is maple with a darker than usual coloring. Chocolate quilt would be rad. Jeff sometimes has it on the tops-of-the-day deals. Clear gloss for that, of course.

I recommend the EVO gold frets. Get whatever size is your fave

So I'm liking the clear quilt with honeyburst edges but it's not offered as an option on the AW5.

Give them a call. Not every option or color combination is listed in the online builder.

Here's a couple of links for more inspiration.
Guitar Gallery https://www.kieselguitars.com/guitargallery/
You can search by color or wood.

If you see something interesting, add the picture number(without letters) to the end of this URL and you can see the specs. https://www.kieselguitars.com/guitars-in-stock/

Option HST is Honeyburst Brown Edges. So available, but not in the builder.

A CT6, but it looks like the color saturation or contrast is turned way up:
