It sounds like they pretty much added in all the passive switching options. Not sure exactly what was meant by "coil tapping" vs "coil splitting," as their explanation is a bit pedestrian. I'm going to assume they *really* meant parallel coil wiring and then coil splitting, as that would make the most sense.

If all the above is the case, then there is little to complain about with the tonality options that guitar offers. I didn't care for the distorted sounds (too thin/bright for my tastes), but the cleans were quite nice. Slap some Carvin pickups in there and see what develops; I'm guessing it would be even better.

Brief detour... can anyone help me figure out what's going on here?

This is a Les Paul Special 2016.. and I think it's a Les Paul Special Plus Limited from that year.. those are slab bodied topless guitars like a standard Special, but with humbuckers (the LP Custom's 400 series pair).

Here's a stock photo of the guitar in natural clear:
Image

Slab of mahogany with no maple top obviously.

Here's the one on sale:

It appears to have a typical 2 pc slab body...

but then you see the back (BTW those are switched in Duncan Antiquities buckers, the 490's are tossed aside):

And it appears to be a one piece slab body. So my I'm wondering what the general opinion is regarding what direction the optical illusion is? Is the figure making, when looking at the top of the axe, a one pc body look like a 2 pc just because of a centerline color separation? Or is the figure making a 2 pc body look like a 1 pc when looking at the back?

It's a cool geet either way.

Looks like a one-piece body to me, even on the top?

Yeah that color division under the stop tail is messing with me though...

It's just a one-piece, lucky them! However, it bugs the crap out of me that they have the pickup switch parallel to the strings instead of perpendicular.

Easy. The stock photo is a 2 piece, the above example is a 1 piece. Gibson have always been inconsistant that way. My Studio is a one piece. I thought they were all like that until I spotted 2 piecers (not a word) in stores and whatnot.

I think it's a well done two piece design. There are some very faint lines around the rear screw peg, and pickups). The wood looks like it could have come from a thicker piece, milled in half, and then glued up. It's a good match, however.

Next new model would have a new "denim" finish.

Off with the middle American fabric shirts and on with the leather jacket for the new file photo..

I hope he keeps this important and historically rich company, inextricably tied into the history of jazz, pop and rock (and country, and..) music.
